Thinking of buying

I am looking at getting a 2000 Lightning w/21K miles on it and No mods from a dealer. I can purchase an extended warrty, but have seen lots of pots about blowing spark plugs out of the head. Is there anything I should be looking for in specific with this year model. The truck is in imaculant(sp) condition. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Don't let the posts about problems with the 5.4 heads keep you from buying a very fun truck!!! Considering how many 5.4 were built ..it is a very small % of 5.4's that let the plug fly...

I sold a convertible C5 before I bought my L and the corvette had just as many problems posted ( clutch, column lock, drivers seat etc etc ) at corvetteforum.com as the L has here at f150online.

Back to your question... there was a few changes between 2000 and 2001... but nothing that makes the 2001 any better than the 2000......... I know when I was looking for an L I wanted an unmodified truck!!! I could not find one used so I bought new... If its clean go for it ... you might want to pull out the computer and check to see if the truck has ever had a chip, before you buy it so the seller will honor the warranty. If you have a problem you would not want them telling you that there is evidence you removed a chip!!!

Excellent point about the chip! Check to see if it's had one.

Find out if the intercooler has had the recall fixed, and check the body seams on the roof for cracking. A while back I heard about some rear windows leaking.?

If your gonna use it at the strip at all? You'll wanna know the 99-00 has a smaller MAF, 3.55 gears and a smaller steel driveshaft. The 01+ models had 3.73's and a big aluminum DS.

Good luck, WOT

Make sure you get a good deal on it too. It's sad but true: Lightning's values drop pretty quickly

Are the computers on the passaanger side behind the kick panal like the mustangs? Will it be noticable that a chip has been put in it? Not real familar with these trucks first hand. Thanks for the info...

You can pull the PCM and see if the contacts have been scraped off. Yes the port is right above the kickpanel on the passenger side. However, to a get a good look of the contacts you might want to remove the PCM.

I say buy it if you can get a good price. You will not regret it. This truck is a blast! You won't be able to wipe the smile of your face.
