Filter Cleaning

What up? I have an open filter like most of the people here and was wondering how do u clean it? I want to clean up the whole engine bay adn was wondering how do you clean up the filter. Any tips on washing the motor? Its getting really dirty in there and its time for a bath. Any tips and info is appreciated.
Thanks,
Josh

I have the K&N and use their cleaning stuff.

For the engine, I cover the filter with a towel or something like that and try not to spray water directly there.

Cleaned out my engine bay last week - Use concentrated Simple Green in the spray bottle. Spray it on just about everythinig but your electronics (and coil pack areas), then gently hose off a few minutes later. Best to do all of this on a cloudy day, with a COOL engine. If you have a leaf blower or compressor, give your engine a nice blo-dry afterwards!

To properly clean a K&N style open element filter. Buy the K&N cleaning kit. Get the one with the srpay oil (not the squirt).

First take filter off, then spray K&N cleaner all around. Let sit for 10 minutes. Then wash from the inside out (very Important), Basically you put the hose in the filter and just let the water run through it.
Then let air dry.do not spray air or anything to speed up the drying.
Once dried, then spray a light amount(very important) of K&N oil around the filter and then reinstall.

I think many of us are running the 12" S&B Air Filter. Here is a filter maintenance recommendation sheet for the S&B filter. Notice they say it functions better (top filtering condition) when dirty..
I use the K&N Cleaning kit that you can easily find at say AutoZone for my cleaning my S&B filters. IF you can let cleaned filter sit overnite before reoiling (filter must be dry). CAUTION: Do NOT aim forceful water from say garden hose nozzle directly at the filter when cleaning it or you will damage the filter. Spray cleaner so that the cleaning stuff flushes the filter clean from cleaniest area to most dirty area. Read the K&N cleaning kit instructions closely and follow their reoiling instr.
Oh, when I clean my engine bay I place a plastic garbage bag over the air filter.... leave it loosely fitting and water will stay out and air will be unobstructed.

I duck tape a trash bag around the filter. Then the easiest
thing that I have found to clean the engine is "Scrubbing Bubbles"
Thanks to my "show" buddies Donna and Darren and Melissa
for that hint ... It doesn't discolor the rubber the way the simple
green did ....

Ditto all the others that use the K&N cleaner ... It works great
