First time at the track with the L

Finally had a chance to run my 2001 Lightning last night.

Truck is stock except for 20" Spank 5s and straight pipe after the cats.

1st run - 90 degrees

60'...2.18

1/8...9.32

14.52@93.69

2nd run - 75 degrees

60'...2.07

1/8...9.09

14.23@95.11

3rd run - 65 degrees

60'...2.09

1/8...9.04

14.12@96.42

I was pretty disappointed after the first run, but after it cooled down a bit, I was right around what I was expecting.

Didn't have time for another run, but I think 14.0s are possible on the 20s.

I think I'm gonna put the stock muffler back on and see how the times are affected in similar conditions.

After the last run I felt pretty good...the other Ls, including an 03 were running in the 14s @ around the same MPH.

I then talked to a guy with a silver 01-02 L on Nitto DRs. I watched it run a 13.18@103.xx. I talked the owner's son and he said the truck was bone stock

Any idea how much the 20s hurt my ETs and trap speeds?

I think you will gain with the stock muffler. call me crazy but i think i lost when i took it off for straight pipes. I dont have any info to back it up but it seemed like it definatley bogged down without a muffler. i put my muffler back on adn it seemed much quicker. I am gonna go with the jdm catback for that nice sound. I had the mac and it was ok but fit and finish saw pure *****. So back to the drawing board.

I have never noticed any decrease in performance with my straight pipes and I doubt it would effect your ETs much. Some say you may lose a little low-end torque and some say you may gain a little upper-end hp. One thing is for sure: you lose the weight of the muffler.

As for your times, work on your launch and whittle your 60' time down. You should see 13s easily.

I'm going to keep the straight pipes on for now.

Only change will be 16" ET streets next time down the track.

Still trying to keep the warranty in tact for now, or else I'd already have the filter/chip/pulley combo.

I don't know the elevation there in CA but the times seem way off for a 2001 you should be running 13.2-13.7 with a more consistant 13.5 range .
I don't think the 20"s hurt to much but the 60' is hurting you
I ran a 13.334 with just a kn panel and cat back I don't believe the aftermaket exhausts hurt I think it helped me at least on the top end.
I guess the air temps didn't help you either when I ran it was the high 40's low 50's but your trap speed seems a little low I was @102-103 range
Just work on your launch you'll get a low to mid 13 for sure
I still can't launch thats why I got some slicks(thanks Gator) and traction bars
Have fun shooting for that mid 13
Good luck

Hey TR, put a muffler on that **** and gain a tenth or two! You definately hurt your low end (thus launch) by removing it.

Good luck!

Guys, first of all, he was running at California Speedway most likely. Its 1100 ft elevation to boot and quite warm there.

Track prep at this place is a complete joke. They also seperate ricers from domestics and force your front tires through the water box, which give off the line traction something to scream about.

20s do hurt in the 1/4 because of the weight. Before you think about ET Streets, do me a favor and buy a set of traction bars and a loop. I saw some idiot out at Irwindale thur night hopping like a fool at the water box smokin his tires in his L and its a wonder he didnt snap his shaft. Though they ask if you have a loop, the never check which is stupid.

You should of easily hit 13.8's there. Work on that traction problem and you should have no prob. Our tracks here are nothing like what you guys have back east.

If you get a set of ET Streets, get a driveshaft loop and some traction bars. You won't be sorry.

The temperature did help a little bit. I gained 3MPH between the 90 degree run and the 65 degree run.

Track prep that night was actually actually pretty good. I don't think I'm doing too bad in the 60' department considering the 20s/Goodyears I'm running and I should still have a little more in it.

Fontana is about 1200' elevation, but the DA around that time was around 2400'. Not too bad considering the time of year here in CA.

A friend of mine has a 16" ET street setup he wants to sell so I figure I'll give them a try. I'll pick up a set of traction bars before I do.

Each wheel/tire weighs about 85-90lbs so cutting that in at least 1/2 with the 16s in the rear should help a bit.

Gonna keep the straight pipe on for now and just change one thing at a time until I find out whats hurting my times the most.
