Help! Towing Questions?

I bought a master tow, tow dollie to pull my daughter's mustang from Arizona to Georgia for her to go to college. My question is she has a 5 speed manual do I need to take the drive shaft out in order to tow her car ? Also, will i experience any weight problems towing the car with my 99 stock L? Ford could not answer these questions. the rep was a woman and had no idea what i was talking about. the dealer said to put the rear wheels on the dollie and lock the steering wheel in place but the manual says the front bumper could be damaged. I just painted her 97 g.t. convertable and don t want to damage the car or my truck. Any special things i need to do to the truck for such a long tow of about 2000 miles in 3 days? thanks for the information

Put the front wheels on the dolly, strap it down. Put the Mustang in neutral and let her rip. You can take off the driveshaft so it doesn't rack up miles.

Your Lightning will pull it w/ no problem. I would take the overdrive off on large hills or grades, but that's it.

Dont tow that car without removing the driveshaft!! With just the output shaft turning youll have no oil slinging around to lube anything. If it were local it would be fine but from AZ to GA is a long tow on a dry output shaft bearing. The short amount of time it takes to r&r a driveshaft is worth the peace of mind that your daughters transmission isnt going to fail her. As far as the truck is concened it should tow that car on a dolly just fine and is well within the towing capacity stated by ford.

so

if i tow with out taking the drive shaft out it will damage the transmission? I put it up on the rear wheels and it looked kind of low but on the interstate i don't think it will be a problem . I could take the front fasica off with little problem ?

I cant say it will damage the transmission for sure, but as a rule its a no-no to dolly or flat tow with the drivetrain intact unless the car is specifically set up for towing... some vehicles such as a few saturn models and some 4x4's have feature that make towing acceptable. If you can load the rear wheels on the dolly and tow safely then you should be fine!

First off I don't know specifically about a 97 stang. But in my experience a manual tranny is fine. It's the automatics that cant take it because the motor is not spining the front pump. On a manual there is no pump. It's just a simple gearbox w/fluid slung by the rotating gears.
