Differential temperature

I finally installed a diff temp gauge. The data is interesting. Even with a finned, double capacity Mag-Hytec cover, diff temps routinely read as high as 220. Now I'm not talking about racing, I'm talking just driving 80-90 MPH on the highway.

At the open track event at Willow Springs this weekend, temps actually stayed a tad cooler than that. I supposed the 20-minute length of the sessions was to thank here, as the temps just gradually keep on rising.

This seems mighty hot. Do you think the sensor is bad?

On the plus side, the tranny temps never went above 150. No auxilliary cooler, just a B&M pan. Temps are measured not from the port on the driver's side, but in a hole tapped right in the pan.

Tim, where is the sensor located on your rearend cover?

Its pretty thick stuff and remains a pretty consistant temp. I had a boil over one time on the cobra running on thunderhill. It was pretty damn hot out and i did 20 laps in a row hitting up to 170 mph on the straight.

Which fluid did you end up going with? Mobil 1, Redline or Royal Purple?

You must be right. I noticed my paint is gone on the cover and it is rusting.
I am going to change mine soon.

A friend of mine who 4 wheels a lot has limited slip and he had to replace some wheel bearings because of the particules from the limited slip. His shop told him to change it ounce a year.

Its the opposite of the East Coast.

You guys have buttloads of quality dragstrips and tons of events. Here, its a ghost town for events and are tracks are complete **** except for Sacramento Speedway and Fomoso Speedway, both are a good distance from me.

However, if you are into any kind of road racing, we have a LARGE assortment of tracks for that. Thunderhill is the most beautiful.

Heres the newest pics around thunderhill

Heres a pic of SearsPoints track

Heres a pic of Laguna Seca's Map

Heres a pic of ButtonWillow Raceway

The sender is in the port specially for that purpose in the Mag-Hytec:

I use Mobil 1 with 8 oz. Torco friction modifier.

Best fluids ive used have been Royal Purple or the Redline. Both dont require friction modifier and the fluids run much cooler. I doubt your sender is bad Tim. I bet if you get up on a road course for 20 mins, the temps will skyrocket...

Let's see, we have Buttonwillow, which is not to be confused with Willow Springs. And we have Thunderhill, which is just out of Willows, CA.

Here is the N.A.S.A. Socal schedule for this year:

February 8/9- Willow Springs Raceway
March 7/9- California Speedway
April 6/12- Open Track Challenge
May 24/25- Willow Springs
June 21/22- Buttonwillow Raceway
July 12/13- California Speedway
July 26/27- Willow Springs
September 6/7- Willow Springs
October 18/19- Buttonwillow Raceway
November 15/16- Buttonwillow Raceway

I did Cal Speedway in March, Willow Springs this weekend, and hope to make all of the other events this year. Me at Fontana:

I have looked and looked for max recommended diff fluid temps. Anyone have a reference? I have everything I need to install a diff cooler except for the Tilton pump ($200), so I can easily bring the temps down if they are too high.
