Plug Problem On ShortBlock with KB - Help

It appears the mechanic doing my shortblock install made a couple of errors, don't know if any of them lead to the condition of the #3 plug - passenger side (pic below) or not. Both errors were probably due to his unfamiliarity with Lightnings and me not being more specific. Anyway he:

1). Connected the three way switch from the chip that was in my truck to the new single program chip that JL had burned for my new mods- don't know if this caused the new chip program not to work or not
2). Gapped the Denso 22's to .050 instead of .035, he said that is what the KB kit recommended - I had told him 35 as Jl had said, but I should have written this and several other things down for him.

Any input as to what caused this plug damage, and what I should do next?? The other three plugs on that side looked fine to me (pic below also) they had about 500 miles on them, and even the damaged plug didn't look blistered or burned. Alot of you probably have read more plugs than I, so please jump in with opinions. Haven't pulled any from the driver's side but will tomorrow. Some direction would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark

Of all the spark plug pictures I've seen around here those are the leanest running ones of all. The first plug has the ground strap burned off of it. Its not broke, its melted.....there is a difference.

Looks like you have to get it on a dyno.

There was probably a lot of detonation going on. Check the plugs on the other side and replace that bad ones. When I stuck my KB bell on I was running a 2lb lower and the 3.5" upper. Later that night I decided I wanted more. I didn't have the 6lb lower with me so I stuck on the 2.5" upper. Talk about more than double the boost. Needless to say I stomped on it and got off real quick as I heard some rocks in the engine. I took the truck home and checked the Denso IT-24's gapped at .028. All of the insulators were broke except for one. They slid down and covered the tip.

I agree, WAY TOO LEAN
Anytime you hear Johhny talk about the KB, you hear him stress the point on HOW MUCH MORE AIR is brought into the Motor.
A NEW TUNE IS CRITICAL AND NEEDED IMMEDIATE.

And BTW how do you connect a 3 way switch to a single Chip ???
I have both the Single and Multi Diablo Chips,
The Single Sport Chip doesn't even have a place for a switch,
But the Multi Delta Does.
Unless your using a Delta with just one program on it ???

Hmmmmmm

Good question, perhaps he did not change the chips out. I will go through the parts box and see what chip he did put in.

How much boost are you running. Also what kind of gas are you running. I would make sure you have the right chip in. Call me if you have any questions.

Denso's are the weakest plugs when it comes to detonation.

Most expensive, less forgiving.

NGK's all the way. Drop in some BR7's.

Get your butt on thr dyno and get that A/F done. When youre pushing that much air, you want to close the gap so you dont get plug blow out. Thats exactly what happened in your situation.

I have found the NGK's don't hold up as well as the Denso's. I have replaced to many NGK plug's. Mark I would gap your Denso's between .030 to .035

Gee, when denso's get detonation, why do they crack the **** out of the ceramic? 90% of the time, this doesnt happen with NGK's. Thast makes the NGK a stronger plug. It will be a cold day in hell that i spent $80 on a set of plugs just because they improve my idle a tad bit more.

Maybe when i get JJSVT to tune my truck with his l33t skills, he can install IT24's.

I have to agree. The ceramic insulator sucks. What happened the last time JJ tuned someones truck at the track?

NCETRY

Thanks for the input. I tried to find and a dyno and O2 shop in Anchorage before I headed back to Valdez, but everyone said none were operating, is that right NCETRY? Looks like I will send in chip for reburn, get some new plugs and try it again. I was running about 14#'s of boost, and the best gas I can get is 91 octane. Am going to pull drivers side plugs tonite (passenger side was fun-sure drivers side is pleasant too ). I have JDM's long tubes and exhaust, and I could not hear any detonation while driving. Wonder if the mechanic drove it for awhile before changing the chip out. I will call him tonite also.

Sure it will be fun when I get it running right!!!

Hale's Tech has a dyno and can test your air fuel for you. Also Power Source can reburn diablo sport chips. Also I am sure you could get them to try some tunes on the dyno and really get your truck dialled in. Maybe we could see who put's up the higher number's. I should be running by next weekend. Call me and maybe we can work something out.

Be careful of inaudible detonation. Try to be easy on it and stay as much out of the boost as possible..
