could my driveshaft break??

i just installed a 4lb pully, chip, filter.

i ran 13.4 w/ 20' chrome reps and 295/40/20 tires...

i went out and got some nitto 555r's 305/45/18's to do alittle better on the 60fters and overall time.

i have been told that i need traction bars so the driveshaft wont break, is that true??

i have no traction bars, and no driveshaft loop...

what do you guys think? will i be ok?

Do you have the AL driveshaft or the steel one?

I would like to add to this question, since it is a good one.
Lets say my man Cobra97 had his 4#er, chip & filter....but never ran at the track, no slicks & no draggin. Only street tirs & road use. Then is axle wrap & driveshaft breakage a problem as well?

If you do not frequent drag strips and run street tires (not DRs) then you should be fine without traction devices, DS loops, etc. I haven't heard any cases of driveshaft failure on the street with street tires...

I don't think you should need traction bars or a DS loop at the track if all you use are street tires (NT555s, F1s, Toyos, etc). You simply don't hook hard enough to need them *that* much. Although traction bars will still help prevent axle wrap which is always a plus.

Now with DRs, especially at the track, I would definitely recommend both traction bars and a DS loop. You'll take more advantage of your setup with that combo (bars and DRs) and the loop is needed because you're going to be hooking a lot harder. It *may* not break but that loop should still be there...

Hope this helps...

ok, this did help me alot, but im going tomorrow, and i shouldn't break anything w/o traction bars should i? i might have a loop, but i can get traction bars relatively quick if i have too, but i really want to run tomorrow w/ the drag radials, i've heard people running the D/R's w/o traction bars....

will traction bars clear the JLP 3' shackle??

and i have a 2001 so i have a aluminum d/s

The bars should clear the 3 Inch Shackles. Did you actually get a 3 inch drop though?

Can't help ya on whether you should run the DRs tomorrow or not. I would if I were in your position, but I can't promise you nothing will break...

Slap the DS loop on if you have it already. Should only take but a minute and it's better to be safe than sorry.

well the best 60ft time that i will get is a 1.9....

im going to Milan which is one of the worst tracks for 60ft times, lightnings w/ full on slicks can only get 1.8's...

so i think i'll be allright, my shackles did not even give me a quarter inch more drop then the 2 inchers, i talked w/ a friend of mine and he thinks everything will be ok, because our local track does not hook that good, but i am ordering some traction bars.

You should at least get a drive shaft loop. Everyone should have one.

They are not that expensive. The JLP and PSP loops couldn't be much easier to install either. You don't even have to remove the drive shaft to put one of theirs on.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

And from what I've heard, even removing the driveshaft is only a couple of bolts.

I run the JLP one (same design as Sal's and vice versa)...2 piece.

i ordered the truck trak traction bars from sal today, so i should have them pretty soon.

im getting my d/s loop made for me from motor city mods, way cheaper than psp and JLP.

but im still gonna run a couple of times tomorrow w/o anything, i got a couple of friends going w/ me so they'll be watching making sure of the launch.

im not gonna launch it hard, im just gonna hit the gas hard when the light turns green, im not reving it up or anything and dropping it.

im pretty positive that i should be safe at this track, im not gonna get a super hard launch like you guys think im gonna get, there was a lightning there last thursday that had huge, and i mean huge Hoosiers (like Rob02lightning) and he was only getting like 1.7x 60 fters...

you think it would be safer if i used the lower bolt on my JLP shackles?? and up the drop a bit to make sure of the pinon angle? or does it matter?

Go on the third amber--don't wait for the green light.

These things launch hard off idle, it's the way a lot of people launch them. You've been watching 2 many, 2 fast, 2 furious commercials if you think you can rev the hell out of it in neutral and dump it in gear coming off the line. You're best hope is Milan will be it's usual greazy *** self and it won't let you stomp off idle so you can hear the u-joints munching on the driveshaft.
