Air Filter ?

As you all know I am in the middle of creating a monster!
I got the thing started and was standing out side the truck with the hood off and revved the throttle twice and colapsed the K&N fillter. It's the 12" cone style with ram air I bought from JLP. I don't fault the set up just think I need to flow more air! Any one have any thought?

Thanks for your help, Suavy

Maybe a filter with some sort of internal cage or structure could solve the problem?

You could also try a 9" powerstack, less length for the force to act upon, so it takes more force to collapse?

You may want to go with a 9" filter. I did some searching and found this:

I say the above based on this old thread--see Sal's first post:

I too would like to get a part # and brand of a filter which won't suck in. The old JL filter I had would do that, but it was almost 2 years old so I think that was the problem. I now have a filter I got from JDM and I don't think it gets sucked in. It is either because it is brand new or it has more of a conical shape than the JL one which gives it more strength?
I have been running 20-22psi on the street for a while now and it doesn't show any signs of being sucked like the old one.

I wish I could help ya. But on a similar situation with my truck, I had the "outerwear" filter over my filter and when reving the motor I noticed how it was being sucked into the filter. I threw the outerwear away

Sauvy,

Having air handling experience as an engineer I gotta say no to the smaller filter idea. If your collapsing the large filter and it's in good sound condition? Going with a smaller one will only serve to create a more restrictive point. Yeah maybe it won't collapse but it'll create a higher delta P accross the filters pores. Not good for good filtration, not good for getting the most HP/air flow, and not the direction you want to go.

I'd suggest you just take some type of wire mesh and form it to match the inside shape. Or if it's difficult to get in there? Maybe make a two piece wire mesh that when joined will form a solid structure. I'm pictureing something like a chicken wire fence but bent into the shape you need. You'll want it made from stout material and de-burred/clean so it'll never get ingested.

I've not seen anything from the filter mfgs? But maybe they have a product/solution that fits your needs exactly? Might check with them directly.

WOT

From: Colorado,
How about taking some 1/4 in. sq. hardware cloth and make your own.

I think that's what it is called. You get it at most hardware stores.
I think they use it for rabbit hutches and stuff like that. Comes in different sizes....

With enough air flowing through the filter, it should hold up and not curve in too much. At the track, you can do the "headlight" mod for better flow...
