Post Wiring

2020is,
I looked up the wiring on my 2001 Ford F150 Service manual CD and found some good information. It appears that ford has a wiring harness for the auto mirror that goes from the mirror to serveral places in the truck. The CD said it was harness # 17K745. The connector that plugs into the mirror is C916. This connector should have 3 wires coming out of it.
The first wire is wire #294 which is a power wire that is hot when the ignition is in the "run" position. This wire is white with a light blue stripe and should be on pin 7. It connects from connector C916 to C243.
The second wire is wire #57 which is the ground wire. This wire is black and should be on pin 6. It connects from connector C916 to C919.
The third wire is wire #140 which is hot when the gear shift is in reverse. This wire is black with a pink stripe and should be on pin 5. It connects from connector C916 to C919.

I looked again at my buddy's FX4 that has this mirror and it appears that ford makes their own wiring harness that connects right to the back of the mirror via this plug C916. I looked as best I could in my 01 L and didn't see this connector or wires under the overhead console or in the adjacent head liner. So I don't beleive Ford installed these wires and connector on the L.

But....
I looked up the wiring diagram for the L's over head console and found two connections that might work.
The "run" power wire (#294) is the same for the mirror and the overhead console. The ground is not the same ground circuit as the mirror but I think it will work to use the console's ground wire. This is wire #875 which is black with a light blue stripe.
There is no reverse wire going to the console but you could probably do without this.

So it looks like you can connect up the mirror to the power and ground in the console. You'll just have to find that plastic wire tray.

If you don't understand this, please let me know.

Eric

ema100c,
Is this the plug that you were describing? The picture below is the wire coming out of the overhead console that my compass/temp plugs into. Only half of the wires are used.

Can anyone tell me what all the wires below are for? My main question involves which of these wires are the "ignition hot" and the "ground" wire. I really would think that one of these wires is also a reverse wire used when a factory mirror is installed. Any service tech help is appreciated. Also anyone that knows where I can find this type of information for myself would be appreciated.

wiring

2020is,
I bought a CD off of Ebay awhile back that is supposedly the technical service manual for a 2001 F150. (I also got one for my '95 F150 and my wife's '00 Taurus) It has wiring diagrams listed in it and that is where I got the information I posted above. The plug you have shown is the overhead console plug that I mentioned above.
This is plug # C915
It has the following wires:
# 57 - black - Ground connection
# 767 - Light Blue w/ orange stripe - connect to one side of ambient temp sensor
# 470 - Pink w/ black stripe - connects to other side of ambient temp sensor
# 875 - Black w/ light blue stripe - ground connection (my '01 L did not have this ground)
# 19 - Light Blue w/ red stripe - instrument illumination circuit
# 294 - White w/ light blue - power wire (hot in run position)
# 679 - Gray w/ black stripe - connects to central junction box
There are a few other wires listed that I'm not sure they are there as some of these devices do not exist on an L.
# 53 - Black w/ light blue stripe - connect to one side of courtesy lamps
# 705 - Light green w/ white stripe - connect to other side of courtesy lamps
# 1173, # 1174, & # 1175 connect to the "roof opening panel"

Like I said earlier, I beleive you can get your power from overhead console wire 294 and your ground from 875.

I do not see a wire shown for the reverse signal to plug 915.
It beleive it is only in plug 916 which appears not to be installed in the 2001 L unless it is hidden under the console base or head liner. I felt around under the console base where 915 comes out and couldn't see or feel anything.

Thanks for the info. I wanted to make sure we were talking about the same plug since my truck is a Screw FX4. I never took the console out of my L to see what it looked like(I was always under the hood playing ) I guess I will just tap into the hot wire and the ground there at that plug. I will not worry about backing up, I would rather go forward anyway.LOL.

Thanks again for the help. I will let you know how it goes.

Thumbs up Pics please

Mark,
When you get a chance, please post some pics of the wiring and other stuff that came with the mirror.
Also, what do you plan to do about the plastic channel that covers the wires on the windshield? Have you found somewhere to purchase these?

Thanks,

Eric

I will try to post some wiring pics later in the week. I spoke with Mito corp today where I ordered the mirror and I will be sending the mirror I bought back.( Unless anyone wants it for $105 shipped.) I happened to find the same mirror in a S10 blazer this past weekend at the salvage yard. I also called a buddy at the local Chebby dealer and ordered the little plastic channel for the wire.

On a side note when I spoke with Mito corp today they said they do sell the plastic channels for $2.50 but apparently they don't tell anyone they sell them. I informed them that they should include them with the mirrors or at least put them on the website as a recommended addition. I will keep you posted.

Eric, THANKS for the wiring information. It was very helpful in the install of the mirror. Very easy installation with the mirror I got out of the junk yard. I just used a 3M splice connector for the "hot" and "ground", put some heat shrink tube on the wires and plugged in the mirror. It works like a charm. I think the total install took about 10-15 minutes.

The only thing I don't like is that I do not have a plastic channel for the wires. The GM piece is not long enough and apparently when my new windshield is installed this week, the button for the mirror is factory installed on the new glass so I can not move the mirror up as I had planned. Oh well, the wire does not look bad with the heat shrink on it.

Thanks again for the info.

I looked into the part numbers. The first one you listed:

F8VZ17700AA is correct for the oem rearview mirror with autodim.

I seem to remember that there is a wiring harness that replaces the harness in the roof with another that has the connections for the autodim mirror. Seems the other part number is is a mistype or something. I read somewhere that this is a doable mod.
