Diesels aint got nothing on this piston slap

I just had a built longblock installed a couple weeks back. I'm on my second oil change since then and have put 980 miles on the motor. For the first 800 miles, it sounded great. In the last 2 days, it has developed a wicked knocking at idle which sounds for all the world like a powerstroke diesel, just louder. This afternoon I was sitting outside while it was idling and I felt sure the motor was just going to drop out on the ground. The oil level is fine, and uncontaminated. I think its a 5W30 dino oil. Is there anything I can do to fix this? More importantly, does this signal impending doom or at best a shortened lifespan? Or do I just buy a set of earplugs and ignore the racket

I apologize in advance for the poor quality of the recording. It was the best my digicam could do. The sound gets worse at the end as I stepped away from the truck and the background noise subsided. The noise is eminating from the lower portion of the engine compartment .. there's a separate clatter from the cams, but that's to be expected from the crowers.

Noise WAV File

Same here.

When I first heard Dons motor before the quiet pistons I was like Damn that thing sure is loud.
Now with the quiet pistons it sounds just like my L.

Need Don to take a listen though, to see if that is the exact same sound his manley pistons made.

My Manley pistons were noisy, but never like that. Also the Manleys would quiet down alot after the engine warmed up. The noise never completlly went away, but never as loud as Nathan's motor, even at first start up.

Nathan what pistons do you have in your block. I would talk to your engine builder, something has to be wrong. I don't know if running synthetic wwill help or not, but I doubt it would hurt. By the way Jim@ JDM recomended I run Mobil1 0W-20 with my new Crower cams.

Nathan I hope you get the motor running right

Good Luck
Don

Does it quit making the noise somewhat when the motor warms up?

No.

I'm glad to know that I'm not imagining things. Now I'd like to know if this is a problem that's going to cause me problems in the future.

According to REM, the components are as follows:
The Shortblock Includes:
5.4 block bored .020 over,decked and squared
Forged steel crank
Manley Rods
CP or JE pistons
Plasma moly rings
Tri-metal bearings
* the rotating assembly is balanced and the shortblock blueprinted*
ARP rod bolts
ARP main cap bolts
ARP head studs
frp oil pump
new rear main seal and wiper

To answer some of the other questions:

Valve clatter?

No, as I said this is coming from the bottom of the motor. It's a new sound since you last heard the motor, skennett.

BTW
Hows it feel ? Fast ?

Is it strong ?

I guess we'll see. It's only got 980 miles. It hasnt blown up yet, but I'm not really pushing it hard either.

Quiet at Hi-RPM ?

The slapping does go away above 2500 RPMs, and it sounds very nice at about 4000. I dont know if thats because things are moving too fast to knock around at those speeds or what?
