tonneau cover question
tonneau cover question
I want to get a cover.. and the dealer has them for sale.. but I was not sure if there was a cheaper site to order them from adn what is the best product and so on..... and help would be greate thanks....
I just got my Retrax cover in (after waiting some 5 weeks for it) and, aside from the damage done in shipping (which Retrax is helping me with), I love it.
It's not too heavy, yet it's water proof and strong for security. The new style (which I need to post pics of) is pretty cool and very flat. The only problem is that is shows how 'grey' the bed rail caps are--which I now need to remove, sand, and paint black to match.
It's a bit pricy, but has all of the features I wanted in a bed cover. Check out www.rolltopcover.com.

look on ebay...all kidding aside. I just bought one with the buy it now feature brand new for $150.00 there are several different kinds on there for the flare side f-150's though so look at all of them. I feel like I got a good deal though, brand new, cheap, got it in 3 days and it looks great.
i am not sure what kind of bed cover the previous owner of my L put on here...
but I think it is made of fiberglass.. with hydraulic arm things which lift it up when you unlatch 2 rubber stops.. its light and thin, not too bad - but..
the top of it gets dirty like a ****... waterspots, dust etc. I am not sure what to clean/wax the top of it with because whatever I do now is not working. the paint on it is fading and sort of "webbing" too

I think I should clarify my first post just to make sure the facts were straight on the Retrax cover.
The delay has been disappointing, but I would not say the experience has been bad...yet.
I wanted a nice tonneau that was secure (which eliminated soft tonneaus), waterproof, and allowed access to the entire bed (which eliminated the hard tonneaus, although I like the look of them the best).
After researching, I thought Retrax had the best compromises all the way around.
Now, the design was new (again, I'll get pics later this weekend), so they had delays with some of their suppliers.
What kept this from being a bad experience was:
1. They contacted me well in advance to explain the delay and kept me in the loop--I didn't have to go after them continually to find out what was going on.
2. They did not charge me until it shipped, so I had lots of opportunity to cancel
Regarding the damage, that was very disappointing. However, I talked to them about it and there is a plausible explanation: the new design involved packaging up the parts differently. Turns out that the way they packaged the cover itself (vs the rails) is a problem if the shipping company drops it. Since I had one of the first of the new cover designs, I can understand this. They're sending me a new cover (rails are fine) to arrive next week.
To conclude, I appreciate their keeping me involved in the situation and handling it as best as they could, given the circumstances. I have purchased things from other companies that charged you up front, delayed shipping, didn't communicate with you, etc.
Hope that clarifies.

I'll get the pics up this weekend--I think it's pretty cool looking, except the bed caps need to be smoothed and painted black now.
Cost was $949 and shipping was $44 to Texas. Not cheap, but not outside of the ballpark of a hard tonneau.
Install took me about 90 minutes by myself--all clamps, no drilling. If I had to reinstall it again, I think I could do it in 30 mins or less. It's very straightforward once you know what to expect.

I did a ton of research
on tonneau's before I bought my Snuglid..
Let me state up front that IMO ALL of them have compromises. Whether it be security of the items in the back, the cost, the install, weatherproofness (is that a real word?), etc..
So let me ask a couple of questions..
Tim Skelton, (whose truck has always represented the most tasteful upgrades on the forum, other than mine
) what is the benefit of your tonneau over the normal snap or snapless versions?
On the Retrax, how much bed space is taken up by the box? It looks to be at least a foot if not more? pls let me know..
I got a hard tonneau, for the weather and security. Yes if I take it off to carry something its PITA. But I have had my truck for a year and it hasnt happened yet.. so the amount of times that I have to do it is very small.
I came very close to buying both types of tonneaus listed above and am always looking to see why others bought the way they did. I will share this thread and your responses with a good friend of mine that drives a Dodge
oh well he has good intentions
