Changing the blower belt?

Which way does the idler go up or down? I think mine is possibly stuck? I am trying to change the blower belt on a stock 01 L... I can't seem to get it off, and if I did, how would I get it off, do I have to take off the water pump?

You take a 1/2 inch breaker bar and push it down and towards the drivers side.

Put the square drive in the front part of the pulley with the bar pointing upward. Then push hard toward the drivers side and it will rotate downward at the same time.

The pulley has a 1/2" female ..sticlk the male 1/2" braker bar in....push down...towards the ground..while facing the grill..no need to remove the intercooler reservoir...slip the belt off and on behind the pulley...

I ended up loosening the coolant resevoir and moving it out of the way. In my case, the breaker bar was hitting the resevoir. Maybe it depends on what kind of bar you use.

Best bet is to use a "Serpentine Belt Removal Tool" ---
Best 68.00 you'll ever spend ... no more cracked knuckles.

Works on MooTangs too ....

Where do you find a serp belt removal tool? Do the local Autozones carry something like that?

I hate using crowbars on them.

Sears has them:

But my 1/2" breaker-bar(not a crow-bar) works and that is the way they are designed to be removed.

Are you talking about this one?

Or this one? (Not Sears Craftsman)

Ben: http://www.sears.com/sr/product/summ...n.session.new= Yes. That's the 'common' one that most auto tool stores offer. I've not used either one of them as I said, my 1/2" breaker-bar works just fine.

Thanks Dan.

Darn, looks like Craftsman doesn't make a conventional breaker bar.

Neither of those are the one I was talking about.

Carquest is where I saw mine. A friend has one,
so I haven't had to buy one yet.... <grin> $68
and it does all types with Two extension bars
and 8 different "attachment" methods ...

These are the GATES numbers ...
