THE cure for preventing a cracked foglight?

http://www.griotsgarage.com/catalog....1090&SKU=10232

"The adhesive-backed UVB/UVA stabilized poly-laborate vinyl is 40 mils thick. These stabilizers mean it won't yellow. Guaranteed for four years against sunlight, salt and harsh chemical deterioration. DOT approved and optically clear so they won't alter the appearance of headlights. Cleans like glass and easy to install. Perfect for headlights, fog lights and turn signals on cars, motorcycles, trucks and motor homes. Save yourself the cost of a new headlight, and the time installing it! It will withstand a pellet rifle shot from 20 feet with absolutely no damage to the lens!"

Looks pretty interesting to me....

I thought the new gen with the silver shield over the bulb removed was suppoosed to fix the cracking. I have a new set of those at the dealer waiting to be installed. This whole thing with fog lighys that can't be used when it's foggy and wet.

I ran my fogs rain, shine, snow for 2 years before the first one cracked. My opinion is that they are breaking due to impact.

My lighted logos were wired to come on with the fogs and I ran the logos all the time. If heat killed them or heat shock killed them I would have lost one earlier than 2 years.

My bulbs cracked due to heat and rain. 01 fog lights crack very easily. I had my 99 for 25k without a problem. My 01 lenses cracked within 500 miles.

Doug, in my case at least I know there is no impact, as there
is no damage whatsoever to the outside surface of the cover.

The complete starring of the lense indicates that heat is the
culprit. Actually it is repeatable on demand. Run with FOGS
on for an hour or so and just go through the car wash ... and
as Emeril says "BAM" ....

My 02's cracked within a few hundred miles and it was NOT due to impact... I remember the night they first cracked. I left the truck running outside a friends house with the fogs on for about 15 min.. it was raining, When I got home (less than a mile of driving 25mph with no one else on the road) they were both cracked.

Maybe the 00's were stronger??

After having them replaced under warranty I put 11K on the truck without using them at all .. during that time it made many interstate 95 trips and never got a crack. a few months ago I decided on using them one night for a few hours, got home and &*$#@% they were both cracked.

Ford knows they F'ed up on these or they wouldn't be replacing them under warranty. I think we all know if the dealer had any doubt about how they cracked, we would be paying the bill for replacements. With that said, I am very happy they are standing up for a obvious mistake and replacing them.

NOTE: when I had mine replaced the service manager had to look at the truck first before he would approve for the replacement. He said it was obvious it was heat stress and not road hazard.

I've used the 3M stuff. The center part turned brown from the heat. The lamp still cracked after a yr.

The last time I had them replaced the dealer removed the bulb cover. It doesn't look as good, but they haven't cracked yet. I run them everytime the head lights are on. I have almost 20,000 miles on the truck since they cracked last.

I'll keep my fingers crossed. Hopefully I'm cured.

I just took mine out. The dealer wouldn't replace because there are both heat cracks and road cracks on both of them. I tried the GTS covers, but they melted. The dealer replaced them once before with no problems. The fog lights have problems. Why would Ford redesign the light if there were no problems with the lights?

Mine look as good today as the day I bought it.

Of course I've never ever turned them on
after reading all the horror stories though.

Is there a way to get in there and take that little heat sheild out?? If that is the only thing different about the 01/02 fogs and the new replacement/03 fogs then maybe for those that are out of warranty could just take that little sheild over the bulb out and vola no more cracking. Just a thought and it might work.

Later

Answer to the fog light problem: don't turn them on when driving in rain. Worked for me.
