If you look at my old post, you'll notice mine started ticking the day of my first oil change too. Like you Mastertvtech, I was soooo pissed off not wanting to accept a BRAND NEW VEHICLE TICKING. Makes you wonder what the hell they use for oil at the factory THAT HIDES THESE NOISES and why for MOST it starts the day you change the original oil.

Now I have 10k, it taps, raps, ticks, rattles, and rolls every morning. The winter is real bad. I just had to except it like the Vets are all telling you. I often worry too when the time comes to sell it. You can only hope the one who buys it, understands the noises and sounds that come with a Lightning.
I figure I'll take him for a 11 sec run and that'll convince him everything is working well

I know lots of these issues aren't expected when you buy a 40k
"when paid off" Vehicle, but unfortunatly there are engine noises that usually develop as time goes on.

Wait until it starts sounding like a diesel on idle,
your not gonna like that one either.
Cavatation I believe they call it ???

I hesitate to post this as some/many(?) of you will scoff at what I use in my 2001 L's engine. I have posted before and said many times that my eng. makes no unusual noises--none--at start-up(we had some 13*F temps this winter), at 'hot' idle, nor at or after a WOT 1/4 mile pass.

I changed my oil at the 500 mile mark--went with the OEM Motorcraft 5w20 oil and a K&N Gold filter. At 4,000 miles I changed over to a fully synthetic Royal Purple #11(5w20) Racing oil and the K&N filter.

Here is what I haven't said before(maybe once?) and that is I add some DynoSurge Metal Treatment at that first RP change and everyone(6-8,000 miles) since.

No, I'm not a dist. nor connected to them in any way except as a satisfied customer.

I'm not saying "my way is the only way" but my results have been satisfactory and my L has 47,800 miles on it now. Just some "food for thought".

Well, I just changed the oil on my 2004. Put in the Motorcraft 5w20 like it said. Fired it up, guess what. I have the tick I haven't ran it long enough to see if it will go away. I'll reply when I find out.

it's piston slap. there's nothing they can/will do about it. it's a relatively normal thing with stock motors that have forged pistons.

Tick, slap, rat tat tat...

I have a 2000 and got the same problem on the first oil change. Did the same thing you guys did and went to the dealer and doh!

Talked to various people including an Amzoil tech. Told him what the recommended oil was and he told me that they recommend 10W30 on turbo and supercharged vehicles.

I tried it and the problem was gone.

65K later on very hard driven miles and the truck runs like a champ and no noise. BTW I road race the vehicle.

From: Colorado,
Remember guys, these lightning engines have forged pistons as well as forged cranks. They are production engines.

Just as the 99's and 00's got a good batch of connecting rods there could be some accessive clearence on the piston skirts that cause this tick in newer models.

So far I haven't noticed it in my 99.( kings X on a jinx) All I here is all that vacum junk getting itself in position. Kinda like when your shorts get in a wad at a **** flick and you have to adjust things.

I changed oil on my 01 at about 850 miles to 5w - 30 Mobil synthetic and never heard any kind of a specific "ticking" noise. A bit of piston slap when it's cold, and the common "cavitating cracking" sounds from the blower after I put on a pulley. I change about every 750 to 1000 miles or 3 - 4 months(it's not my daily driver), whichever comes first, but I've never had any specific "ticking" sounds.

I've listened and I've looked. The sound I hear can't be really described as a "tick". It is more of a chatter that has no pattern. I took the truck for a 5 minute drive, and it did appear to stop when I parked the truck. But it had just stopped. I can hear the noise from inside the truck with the hood down. However, I cannot pinpoint the source of the sound. I've listened at the wheels, under the hood, under the truck, but I can't pinpoint it. It really sounds like... kinda like something is loose.... I didn't notice this noise before the oil change.

Is this the same thing everybody else is describing in this thread?

i guess I just want to be sure this is "normal".

yeah, you could say that.

[i]Will Ford own up to it [/B]
own up to it? if it's piston slap, then they are going to tell you that it's normal. because it is. not that i'm saying it's anything you should be happy about, but there is nothing they can do to fix it.

they could tear your truck apart and install a new engine, but your chances aren't very good that the new one won't make the same noise.

try driving a modular v-10 with piston slap. 10 of those jokers knocking around in there.

our pistons have very short skirts, and unfortunately, they can be noisey until warmed up.

let us know what they come up with.

good luck.

later,
chris

Superfords,

Why is it that the piston slap begins after the first oil change?

When my problem happened, the dealer informed me that the factory adds an additional lubricant/coating to the oil. When the first change is made and it is drained, sometimes the slap or other inherent problems become more evident. In my case the motor was factory defective. The noise I had was more of a constant knock from the pass side.

With the new motor I swear I heard a similar lower level knock after the first change also, but after switching to Royal Purple Synthetic it is completely gone even at startup.

You know it's kind of funny. I had the slap after my first oil change using motorcraft 5w-30w. I then changed the oil with Mobil 1 at the next service. Either I am losing it or my hearing is going, but I either don't notice the slap anymore or it isn't there. But 12k miles later I am very pleased with the truck. Always puts a smile on my face.

I was able to clay bar and wax last week, and other than rock chips in the fascia, it looks great. So in short after this reflection on a early sunday morning, don't worry about it. The slap may go away but in the big scheme of things it really should rate low.
