Question fuel filter or coil pack?

I have a 99 Lightning with 40k miles on it. I suddenly have a hesitation and missing at cruising speeds and a very rough idle. I understand that the fuel filters are simple to change and may cause this problem. I bought the truck with 25K miles and have never changed the filter nor do I know if it has ever been changed. I have also read that the coil packs could cause a hesitation. Am I on the right track? If so I will try the fuel filter first. BTW how much is a new coil pack and are they easy to replace? Any Info. would be greatly appreciated.

No codes Spanky. Thanks for the input. It probably wouldn't hurt to try the fuel filter.

the more i read it the more it sounds like a fuel filter. It sounds as if it is starving for fuel at times thus causing the hesitation. Besides even if it isn't the fuel filter, it's better you changed it. The 9bux you spend now could save you a *****load in the future.

Thanks Spanky. I am always looking to save a *****load anytime that I can. Hopefully, it is just a fuel filter.

Change it at least every 10K miles. Don't forget the disconnect tool. I bought the cheap plastic set from autozone for 10.95. Changed mine tonight and was easy to do.

All of the help that you get on this site is awesome. I appreciate the time and money saving info. Lightning owners Kick A$$. Hopefully, I will be able to return the favor.

As most have said, change your fuel filter even if it isn't the cause of your problems. You may have a vacuum leak--check for 'hard'/cracked vacuum hoses.

A ragged idle may be caused by a dirty/worn IAC valve too. See this thread(pics): http://198.65.157.241/forums/showthr...le+valve+clean

I will definitely check all of those if the new fuel filter does not fix my problem. Hopefully it is something which I can troubleshoot. I can't stand taking my vehicles to dealers around here. Especially since both of my vehicles are out of warranty. Thanks.

No reason to take your truck to a dealer, especially if it isn't warranty related. Ask around and find an independent shop that specializes in Fords and possibly Lightning engines. A good shop and mechanic can be your best friend. There are many out there, but it's up to you to find the one that suits your needs. Good luck.
