$178.50 to change spark plugs

I went to my local ford dealer today (Power Ford in Tustin) to buy a fuel filter. Out of curiousity I asked a service writer how much to install spark plugs, labor only, If I provided the plugs. He told me it would be $178.50! I asked him if he was serious, and he said that was what his computer told him. He wanted to know why somebody would change their plugs at 30k miles, I could tell this guy was clueless. During our conversation I overheard two other employees discussing a car that was dented while there for service. Needless to say, I got my filter and got out of there. And some people wonder why dealers have a bad reputation.

Theodore Robins in Costa Mesa is a great dealership to goto. Yes, the plug labor is insane. You could pickup a few extensions and and a nice snap on extra long spark plug socket for less then the labor to do the plugs.

According to my brother-in-law, who is a Ford tech, the spark plug change pays 3 hours labor!

He did mine in less than an hour, for a 6-pack...

Takes me about 30 minutes. I have changed/checked the plugs about 7 or 8 times in the past 3 weeks.

i think its slightly remnant of a "tune-up" As i understand it (i really dont know though) back in the day tuneups were kinda pricey because it wasnt just a plug change and a wire check like it is now, it was a little more involved, hence the greater price. Similar to the oil every 3000 miles thing.

But in all honesty, fords have some of the most difficult plug changes ive done. I laughed so hard when i did my friend acura in about 4 minutes. Those are a piece of cake.

Oh easter, im really impressed with 30 minutes. You must be gettin good, my hand dont fit in the back of either the 4.6 or the 5.4. Even the inline 4 cly rangers take me a good hour and a half.

I was quoted $228.00 including plugs by an independent garage, so it appears your dealer was within reason with his price.

What's funny is that I had them do it about a year ago and they charged me $90. I must have gotten lucky.

When I had my headers installed a few weeks ago at a local tuner, I had them put new plugs in too since they were going to be in there anyhow...

They said it was one of the most time consuming plug changes they've ever done!

They called around to various Ford dealerships and asked what their going rate was so they could charge me something fair (not what it actually took them time wise to change em thank god!) and they were all right at $200 for a Lightning plug change...

I changed my plugs 3 times today. I don't have any emissions control devices, my wire harnesses are remounted, and so is the power steering reservoir.

I paid $180 for a plug change back in 99 at a local shop. He said it took him half the day. I've had my plugs changed in less than a half hour by JJ and Johnny.

Is that with your motor out of your truck and on an engine stand?
