Question My Whining Rear End .....

No, thats not the name of a country & western song i wrote in prison. My 01 L has a loud whine between 25 - 30 mph. It started about month ago and getting louder. Fluid level is ok, i have had the truck since it was new (very few burnouts and no donunts). Need help ..... it's driving me NUTS !! it has 30,000 miles on it.

Well, according to Mr. Lego at Seqouia, it means that the gears aren't aligned right or are too loose. The drive shaft is sucking the pinion out of the rear (not completely out, just a little. I think, but you could probably get some more answers. I only recall cuz my 65 mustang has a strange wurbling sound coming from my detroit locker. Hope this helps a little.

A 'noisy' rear end can be rear wheel bearings being loose, worn, or damaged.

It's not lowered, truck is stock, and i drive like an old lady. The pitch of the whine changes with speed.

I thought it might be gears to ...... it's still under warranty. It's just a pain in the a$$ to take it to the dealer.

I truely understand that

sometimes it's just easier to pay to have the work done, instead of fooling with the dealerships

For anybody that runs into this problem ..... they (Ford dealer) replaced the carrier bearings and the pinion bearings, no more whining.

I have had the same problem since new.

Truck has been back to the dealer twice. They changed the bearings the first time and then the gears and bearings the second.

Still whines. It's going in again in about three weeks. I have printed out a couple of case histories from the various F150 sites where others have had the same problem and the factory rep finally admitted that they had some defective housings. In both, a new housing (with contents) cured the problem.

If there is anyone else out there who has been through the same drill, post your info, I can't have too much proof when I take it in next time.
