Bypass?

Would someone tell me what a boost bypass is good for? I understand what the bypass does, but does it do anything for performance (ET)? I know people have gone into boost dump after burnouts at the track without it, and get *****ty times. It seems better to keep it, and just disconnect it at the track. Would somebody please clarify this?
