Problem with Trans Temp Gauge
Problem with Trans Temp Gauge
I just re-installed my Autometer Gauges in the new truck and as soon as I turned on the key my Trans Temp gauge "buried" to the max.
I went to my local speed shop and they said it sounded like a bad sending unit.I changed it and now the gauge works, although it's reading like 60* too hot.
Last summer even in 120* heat it maxed out at 180*
Now in 80* heat it starts at 110* as soon as I start up, and reads as high as 220*!
I know it's not accurate.Anybody got any ideas??
Are all Autometer electric sending units the same??
Tahnks for any help.

I'd bet it was the guage itself and not the sending unit, you have to do something pretty extreme to get a tranny over 200 degrees in a forward gear without powerbraking. It's easy to do in reverse, though.

Maybe a pinched wire or a bad ground somewhere? A multimeter might shed a little light on the subject. I'm not sure exactly how to go about testing an autometer gauge or sending unit, but I'm sure there's a "proper" voltage or resistance that you should be seeing... at least then you can verify whether it's the gauge, wiring, or sender.
HI!... I've always had trouble with "ELECTRICAL" temp gauges. That's why I always use "MECHANICAL" temp gauges now for about the last 10 years. Never had a problem since I switched. Get yourself a "MECHANICAL" tranny temp gauge. More accurate IMO.
