New Magnaflow pipes and high-flow Cats

I saw a reference to this on another BB.

I called Magnaflow and spoke to Jim in Consumer Sales. I told him what I'd read: Two pipes with high-flow Cats, about $350(expected), and shipping in mid-April. He said there was no such thing coming that he was aware of. He then said I wasn't the first today to ask about this product so, he said wait while he checked with Production. He came back on in a few minutes and said, "Yes, they were being set up for production, there was already a drawing of them(which meant they were approved for production), but that he doubted the mid-April shipping." I almost forhot the most important thing--the p/n is 93928.

On another thread(don't remember where or when?) it was stated that our OEM exhaust maniflods were pretty good and that the cats were the power-robbing culprits. This sounds like it could be an inexpensive way to get more power..............???

What do ya think?

Dan

I agree with you Lightninrod.I ordered the pipes from mark at bop on monday.he told me about them about a month ago.hes mot sure when they will ship though. ill have to wait on production. ive read tests that the stock cats are really the only restriction and Ford knows about it.i hope this will save me header money.

Dan that was my thought all along that the major restriction in
the factory exhaust system is not the factory manifolds but rather the 4 factory cats.

Dan, where can I go to read more about this? I posed the question awhile back on what I could do to just change to high flow cats and they said I would need to go have a shop custom build me something. So to make sure, is that kit what I would need to go from my stock headers to my cat back? Thanx for the info .

Bill- You can end up with the same mid-pipes by purchasing (2) high-flow cats from Magnaflow, (2) 90 degree madrel bends and have an exhaust shop weld on for you. I have a total of $220.00 in my midpipes. $70 ea for for the cats, $30 for both 90 degree bends and $50 labor from the exhaust shop. Below is a pic:

Any gains with the Magnaflow cats? That sounds like a relatively cheap mod if there are gains to be had, and not that difficult to arrange. I'm sure a decent exhaust shop has the tubing and facilities to do everything...

Also, does it change the sound at all?

Hankfan, I'm guessing you kept the stock headers, correct me if i'm wrong. Did you notice any increase in hp or more importantly to me in the sound from the exhaust?

Thanx,
Bill

Yes there was a increase in power no doubt in adding the high-flow cats. However the big change was in the loudness of the exhaust. I am running the JDM Silver Bullet cat-back and it sounded great but I was looking for a little more volume. Well I got that and then some when I removed the factory 4 cats and replaced them with the 2 Magnaflow high-flow cats. I would say that my current exhaust is at least 40% louder than the Silver Bullet with the factory cats. My exhaust is right on the edge of being too loud to be honest though. But it sounds freaking awesome!!!!!!! I have had several people compliment me on how my L sounds.

Don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but these catpipes will be illegal in California. There is no such thing as an aftermarket cat for OBDII exhaust systems, at least in California. As succintly stated by California Muffler.com:

"If your vehicle is OBD2, you have two legal choices:

A remanufactured converter that has a 25,000 warranty, or

A new converter from your local dealership."

There simply is no C.A.R.B. approval available.

I don't know whether any emissions testing shop would catch it. All I am doing is stating the law. Whether it can be easily broken is another matter.

P.s. -- I'll be ordering a set of the Magnaflow catpipes.

HaHaHa. Yeah I would never move to Cali b/c the way they are and 91 octane gas is not my thing. -Mat-
