Newbie plug checker here...couple of ???s please.

I just checked the search engine for pics of the coil packs. Someone showed me briefly where they're located a couple of months ago, but I forget. I just looked for a few minutes and didn't find anything. I don't want to start monkeying around under there and screw anything up.

Does anyone have a pic or a link to a pic of one to get me started? Any info is appreciated!

Thanks,

Dan

From: Colorado,
Had me baffeled when I first brought mine home to
Start on the left side. Look for the chrome fuel injection rail.
Now look under it.
You will see the 4 round black caps with a yellow sticker on the top.
They have two small wires going to them from the valve cover wireing harness.
There is a small 7 mm bolt head visible and you must unplug the wire and remove that bolt before lifting off the coil pack and plug boot.
Plenty of pics and info in the archives.

From: Colorado,
Look at your left valve cover where you put the oil in the engine.
Now at the 2 o'clock position go over about 3 inches. Now straight down under the chrome fuel rail.
See that round plastic thing with the yellow lettering on the top.
THATS IT !
Notice there are 4 on each side? Those are the coil packs.
They actually go through the edge of the intake manifold.

recommendation

I now you're new, and i'm not discouraging you to work on your truck, but if you can't find the coil packs, you probably shouldn't be messing around with them. See if there's a local guy that can help you till you get the hang of it. It can be a real pain in the ***. Took me 5 hours to change my plugs the first time...........then you get pretty good. Don't want to see you have any trouble.

Plenty of Lightning owners in Joisey I'm sure someone can give you a hand then you'll be a professonal.

Thanks again. I found it. Just have to get that first connector off to get a feel for it and I'll stumble through the rest. I have the tools recommended in a bunch of posts so we'll see what happens.

Thanks again..Appreciate it.

I hear ya'. I've done minor work on my vehicles in the past. Just never tried checking plugs on one with coil packs as none of them ever ran the risk of launching plugs. Having identified and removed #1, I have a better idea of what I'm in for. And you're right about there being local L guys around. I already drove past Mrinaldi's house twice but he wasn't around. He's done his, so I know he could have helped.

Thanks..

From: Colorado,
You got me in the mood to check mine

I have it up close to the workbench so I can lay in the engine compartment with my feet on the bench. I figure the more comfortable you are the more patience I will have for the plugs.

Reach your finger under the connector and push the release clip while gently wiggling, it should slip right off.

Then pull the coil pack hold down bolt out and lift straight up.

I bought a 5 1/2 inch plug socket and it takes all of it. My first plug looked great and was nice and tight.

I believe the stock plug gap is .054

What is the proper torque for these plugs guys?

I went to autozone to get some NGK TR5. They didn't have them.
They said checker carried them but when I went there the listed them but said they couldn't get them.

Where can I get some NGK TR5 for my stock 99 L on Sunday?

Number 7 is the worst. I couldnt even get it with a swivel. What I did was get a 7 mm close ended wrench, you know the ones that have the close ended on each side and they are set off on an angle. I got the longest one I could find and if you put it on the nut with the wrench angled downwards and pointed towards the firewall, it works like a champ. Have fun.

EZGZ- No specific torque recommendation. Finger tight, then a 1\16th of turn. No anti-seize or loctite. NGK's are available from at least one of the tuners.

From: Colorado,
Done with 4,7and 8.

Your right that 7 was a bugger.
I had a hold of it with a 1/4 inch drive 12inch extention with the 7mm 6pt swivel socket but couldn't get enough torque to break it loose.
Took your advise and ounce it cracked with the open end it came right out with the first set up. Thanks!

Was a nice straight shot with the plug wrench though. That part of the right side went a lot easier than I thought. At least you could see down the holes.

I was lucky. All mine were tight (Thank you Lord).
Really wasn't as bad as I feared. Ounce you disconect of few fuel injectors and vacum lines to make room it goes pretty good. Glad I don't have to do it to often.

Well, with that off my mind its time for a test drive and think about hauling my trailer for vacation this week.
Later
Greg

Spark plug/Cylinder locations'Left' and 'right' are always 'seen/looked at' from sitting in the driver's seat.)

Right side/Passenger side:
Starting at the front:

1-2-3-4

Left side/Drivers's side:

5-6-7-8
