'00 to '01 fog light conversion

I'm sure this topic has been addressed in the past. I'm in the process of purchasing the fog lamp mounting brackets and was told that 99-00 Lightning bumpers will not be compatible with the 01-02 fog lamps unless I'm willing to do some cutting. Is that true?

I'm sure its possible but the easiest way would be to swap out the bumper. The way the lights attach is wacky and a bracket might be kinda hard to make, but possible

to me replacing the bumper is more whacky, seems like a lot of money wasted just to get fog lights that will crack over and pver again. Is the bumper itself what needs swapping? or is it the cover only or both?

replacing the bumper cober is right,,

this is the 99\2000 bracket..

as u can see the metal bracket goes behind the cup for support and for the fog to attach to, it attaches by one bolt on the bottom the the cup, mine is diffrent because i have aftermarket fogs on.

on a 2001+ the actual bumper cover has three holes that the fog clips into for mounting, no metal bracket behind it..

what if you lined the back edge of the new style lense with silicone? wouldnt that provide a nice stick /seal for it? All I need to know is , can you hold the new style lenses in place with your hand and they look correct? If they can physically fit then I can make them stay there is what Im saying

Question for L in Detroit, do you have a better pic showing your aftermarket fog lights?

All I'm trying to do is install the 01 lamps into my 00 bumper and wondering what troubles I'll run into before I purchase the parts and do this.

KONIG:

the fogs are the same diameter, so in theory, u could use enough silicone and or similar product to mount the fog, the trick will be getting it aimed right and staying there through all the bumps, because there will be no solid mount, just a layer of silicone, also have u ever seen some shabby installed lights where, when going down the road they will bounce and shake, u might have that problem, to install my aftermarket fogs, i had to cut the back of the plastic cup off, so the light would sit back enough to look right, in the above photo there is a black bracket there i had to make to reinforce the stock one so mine would not shake, its the one that mounts to the bottom of the stock bracket, then loops around to the bumber...

here is a pic from the front..

Im sure I can come up with something. I have a decent fabrication shop at my disposal here at work. As long as the diameter is the same, and the depth difference isnt too extreme between the 99-00 and the 01-03 lenses. I guess I will order a set of the 03 fogs and see if I cant get it done finally. I will take some pictures of how I do it so I can post it for anyone wanting to know how to do their own. Thanks for the info, I'll keep you guys "posted" ...sorta speak

But the point is what? From what I've read on these boards the '01 lamps are even more susceptible to cracking than the '00s, if that's possible. How difficult would it be to switch to the '03 lamps, which are reportedly more robust?

alphadoggy,

The point was going from the 99-00 set up to 01-03 fog lights. The bumpers between the two series of years wasn't interchangable. It sounds like you have an 01 or 02 L. This only applies to 99-00 owners that want to upgrade the look of their fogs.

No, I have an '00. I assumed, incorrectly, that the purpose of the upgrade was to solve the cracked fog lamp problem. The '01-'02 lamps are even worse in this regard than the early ones, but you'll be fine as long as you never actually use them. I believe they changed the lamps again on the '03s and supposedly they are more crack resistant that previous generations.
