Stuck Starter caused the fire...

Got my truck back today and they said the only thing they could find wrong with it was the starter. They didnt actually say it was the starter because the discription I gave them didnt really coincide. But they couldnt get it to even turn over so they had to replace it anyhow. They said it looked like thats where the fire was coming from, so I guess that WAS it. I had a starter stick on me before on a mustang I had and it didnt sound anything like what my truck sounded like...plus I had to totally disconnect the battery on the mustang just to get it to shut off.

As long as it's fixed I'm fine with it. They didn't clean it or even use seat or floor mat protectors, but I didnt have time to mess with that. Oh well atleast she's back in my hands.

makes sense

that starters isn't designed to spin at nearly the rpms you were running the truck at around time for that period of time.

The starter overheated, and there is some plastic in it , and rubber, which would heat up and catch fire, not to mention rubber and plastic don't smell good when burning, and make one hell of a smoke cloud!!!

You should be fine.

I used teflon tape on my fuel pressure guage, as directed......let's just say i should be dead!!! Found out they changed the direction to say use compound, not tape.

I was thinking of getting a fire extinguisher, but thought it would be ricey........who cares, not i'm definetely getting it.

Ya I still don't know what the loud pop was and why it caused the truck to start to idle rough. I started it up for the first time since I got it back earlier (the service manager left it running when I picked it up) and I heard a definative whistling noise, not the blowers normal whining, but a high pitched whistle. I'm thinking it's some air or vacuum tube somewhere because it starts out around 1000RPM or so and the faster you open the throttle the louder it gets. You give it gas smoothly and it's hard to detect. So something may have come disconnected with the "pop" I heard. Also there is a wierd crackling sound a couple seconds after shutdown that my dad and I can't figure out either. Neither of these sounds were there before my truck broke down.

Maybe my truck is just coming of age...it just started the "fart" sound with the exhaust as well...so maybe I should just see them as new sounds that are normal at this age. Or maybe I should make sure and take it to a REAL svt dealership and get it looked at...

hmm

mine crackles all the time, it's in the exhaust.

The pop could have been quite a few things......maybe your boost bypass valve was stuck???

If you're talking about the exhaust cooling down and popping...then thats not the sound on my truck. The sound I'm talking about is almost like when you shut off the A/C and the pressure is relieved on the hoses and they crackle a little bit. Dont picture that happening ..just the sound. And it's only 2-3 seconds after you shut the engine off that lasts about 1-2 seconds. Like I said if it keeps botherin me or somethin wierd starts happening with the truck then I'll go get it checked out. If not then I'm just gonna hope it goes away pretty soon.

Watch out, that certain poster (and you know who you are) might call BS on this thread also untill you canshow pics of the actual fire, the techs replacing the starter and an upload a scan of the service record. Make sure you are in the pics holding a newspaper that clearly shows the date.
