synthetic oil really worth it ?
Yes, it is worth it. I used to believe that synthetic was overpriced. Then, the Air Force moved me to Fairbanks, Alaska where the temperature gets down to -50 in the winter. You would be amazed at how much better the synthetic does than the regular stuff. I will never go back from synthetic to regular.
I saw a report on television that synthetic doesn't start deteriorate until after 7500 miles, conventional was at ~4000 miles. Everytime I've torn into an engine that was running synthetic, it was clean as a whistle, same can't be said for the one's using dino juice. I'll only use synthetic in my vehicles.
YES YES YES, it really is worth it, way less wear on internal parts and great in either cold or hot extremes. From what I've read and my personal experience, you will get your moneys worth in the long haul, John H.
I had a couple of SHO's that I ran synthetic oil in. My youngest son is still driving one at 160,000 miles. Regular oil smelled burnt at a 3,000 mile oil change in an SHO. My older son has a WRX, regular oil smells really bad coming out of it at a 3,000 mile change. He switched to synthetic, what a difference. I originally ran regular oil in my L. The oil cooler keeps it from smelling bad in at an oil change. But due to pressure from my sons I switched. You can hear the difference on an average cool winter morning at my house in the Seattle area at startup.

I worked for Mobil Oil for a short period and saw test results. In a nut shell, your mineral oil has 3 size molecules. The small, which burn off, the perfect size, and then the large ones which create sludge. Synthetics have all the perfect size molecules.
Actually, they had pics of other racing teams who advertise non-Mobil oil on their cars with Mobil 1 in their toolboxes....

See the second para. That is the main reason all my vehicles will have(and have had since right after Mobil 1 was released 25 or so years ago) a synthetic oil in them. Dry start-ups are the biggest cause of eng. wear. Synthetic reduce, if not eliminate this--period! My non-track vehicles get Mobil 1 and my L gets RP!

There really is
a mile high of imperical evidence that shows the superiority of syn over dino oil.. I remember doing a research project on this in High School back in 1971.. and the data was clear then too... the cost difference isnt that great, if you utilize the longer drain intervals that syn affords you.. but like was posted earlier, by Bro in law is a mechanic and he has torn down engines after 100,000 miles and they are really clean.. if you start changing your oil to syn early enough, some still meet specs for a new car engine after 100k miles.. I have run Mobil 1 in almost every car I have owned for the last 20 years without an engine related failure.
I tore down my 500 HP mustang 5.0 Engine last week. I have abused the engine for years, on and off the track. I was going to replace pistons, rings, etc. since it has 100,000 miles on her. I was simply astonished to see the internals. It looked as if the engine was still new. I used amsoil in it religiously. Having seen many an engine torn apart that used conventional oil I am sold on synthetic for ever.
I'm going to try just regular dyno oil in my Lightning. I think the engine will be lucky to survive to 20-30K miles. I can do 1K or 1.5K mile oil changes which would be better anyway.
I still have the Mobil 1 in the ranger and Excursion which I change at every 5K miles.

My 2000 L had 93K didn't burn oil or smoke I took it down to mod. The engine builder said the engine hand little to no wear. I looked at the parts my self and the crank looked un blemished. Mobil 1 synthetic.
