Quick oil question

It's time to change the oil in the 02, and I was curious if it was alright to change over to synthetic immediately. I also noticed that the cap calls for 5-20. I always used 5-30 in my '99... I didn't know that it changed since then. Stay with Mobil 1?

Thanks.

5-30 is fine and i actually prefer it over the watery 5-20. It is recommended to wait 6000 miles or so before going to synthetic. Otherwise, your rings will take longer to seat.

Mobil one is fine. I use Royal Purple while the majority on this board sport Mobil 1.

There are a ton of threads

on this subject in case you really want to do some searching and there are even more opinions. The 5w30 is fine, it meets all manufacturers specs. You may ( and I emphasize may, not will) possibly lose a little bit of mpg due to the heavier weight oil. The reason Ford is using the 5w20 is to pick up gas mileage.
On making the change now, that is fine too. There are several vehicles, inc Vettes, Porsches, etc that come from the factory with synthetic already in them, so its not an issue.
I run Mobil 1 because its readily available in stores and at oil change centers. I personally run it for 6000 miles with a Mobil 1 oil filter and change it then. Some do it every 3000 miles. Some even longer.
Good Luck

My second oil change was at 4,000 miles. That's when I changed over to Royal Purple's #11(5w20) Synthetic Racing oil and K&N's Gold oil filter. RP now makes a 'street'(about the same price as Mobil 1) synthetic in 5w20 but I think(hope) their racing synthetic(twice the price of Mobil 1) provides a little extra 'protection'.

Btw, my eng. at 45,000 miles, has never made those early morning unusual noises some complain about. Lucky? Probably...

Since we're on the subject of oil changes, when should I do a complete fluid flush including changing tranny oil etc. I want to switch to full synth (mobil 1 also?) tranny fluid as well...

My truck has 7500 miles but I redid the tranny oil when the factory tech vbody went in at 3000 or so....

on the oil, if you are running a full syn, then you shouldnt ever have to do a full flush.. the stuff is so clean it doesnt need it..this has been attested to by my tuner and by my bro in law, a mechanic that will only run syn in his stuff and has torn down numerous off road vehicles only to see them absolutely sparkling clean even after 100,000 miles..
I just had my tranny changed over to Mobil 1 with my line mod valve change and the larger tranny pan with drain bold installed. I plan on going 25k miles before another change.. but I dont race my truck and tow only on the rare occasion.. if you are pushing yours pretty hard, you may want to consider a drain interval that is less..

I will probably do a full flush and switch to Mobil 1 for my tranny fluid as well this upcoming oil change. I did not switch to full synth when I did my Vbody (just Castrol ATF)...

I'm sure I can do a search and come up with how many qts. but could you please confirm if it is 6 or 7 qts. with a deep sump tranny pan? I believe 7 or close to it? I've heard the more fluid the better cooling effect, but I don't want to overfill....(at the top of "hot" on the dipstick is the limit correct?)

Last time I went to my dealership for an oil change they tried to add 7 qts of oil (motor oil) so I'd like to confirm beforehand...

Looks like this upcoming oil change is a big one. Other than changing the motor and tranny fluids, what other maintenance procedures should I take care of so I can do it all at once? I have a new fuel filter already so that is fine. And the Motorcraft FL820s is a given (I think that is the part #?)

Thanks

I am hearing both sides about whether to add or not to add synthetic this early. The truck has a touch over 3,000 miles on it.
What is the reasoning for not adding synthetic yet? Everything should be fully seated by now... I would hope.

Actually, the 5w-30 doesn't meet the Ford factory spec. The only thing that meets their spec for the newer 5.4's is a 5w-20. Most dealers aren't pushing the issue and some are even using 5w-30 for oil changes, but if you want to be safe and have all bases covered for warranty, then 5w-20 is the only oil that meets the Ford spec.

It specifically says that 5w30 is not within "Ford specs" in the manual?

What page? Does it say "use of other weights and viscosities will result in voidance of warranty?"

I don't know...maybe we have different manuals? Couldn't find anything in mine but then again we have different trucks

If you look on page 255 of your owners manual you will find a paragraph that states that use only oil that meets WSS-M2C153-H. The only oils that meet that spec are 5w-20 viscosity oils. It's very common for manufacturers to set a spec that a certain product or viscosity meet. They can't tell you what brand or what viscosity, but they can tell you that it must meet a certain spec. It's their way of forcing you to use a certain oil. It sucks, but it's very common. Myself, I prefer the 5w-30 or 10w-30, but I'm way out of warranty and the 5w-30 and 10w-30 meet the specs a 1998 5.4 require, which is WSS -M21C153-G. I doubt very many dealers would be refused warranty, but you never know now days with some of the history I have heard.

This wasn't meant as any criticism, but I'm in the business as a Chevron Oil distributor and many people aren't aware that there is an actual spec that Ford requires for their warranty and the only one that meets that spec is a 5w-20.
