Stall convertor gains?
Stall convertor gains?
A camaro owner with an a4 ss was running 5-6 10ths quicker from one week to the nex't at one of the local strips this past season.
He informed me that it was all due to his new stall convertor.
I just drudged through 28 pages on one thread on ls1.com, and sure enough, the average gain is at least 5/10th's.
Has anyone knocked off 5/10ths or more in an L with just a stall convertor, and if not.....why?
I know my convertor which costs twice what some of the ls1 convertors go for, has not helped me.
My best 60's so far are 1.63's and all my 1.6 60's were run while launching at 1400rpm, which i could have done with the stock stall.
Are high stall convertors a waste of money on an L?
I would like to hear what consistant gains other L owners have had with an aftermarket stall?

Do you know what rpm F-bods make their power at. I know a nicely modded L is making over 500ft-lbs at only like 3200rpms. That is more than enough grunt at a low rpm to get us out of dodge. If their powerband is higher they would really benefit from the higher rpm launch. Then again those pushrod 350's should make decent power at a low rpm.......what do I know
Maybe their stock convertor just sucks at locking up and they can't get them to flash hard enough.Hell if we got 5 tenths.......that would have been my first mod

The Ls1 is just one example of how others benifit from a higher stall joe.
I realize the Ls1 has a different powerband, but i am really after answers as to why an L reaps little if any benifit from a high stall.
Matt had one in his truck and removed it, and he is not the only one.
I know i am not the only one who gets there best 60' launching at 1400rpm with a convertor installed.

When I did my converter I also did a bigger lower pulley so I can not say exactly how much the converter gave me but I launch at 2200 to 2400. I mean I am right on the converter. I never tried going any lower and it seemed to work for my truck .(1.59 w/Heavy a$$ ,20 inch reps on the front)
A low 1.6 is nothing to sneeze at. What were your 60s with the stock ? and have you tried leaving on the converter at higher RPMs.?
Also which converter do you have ? and what is the stall speed?

The reason i said that it does little if anything on my truck is because i have tried launching at high stall and get decent 60's but only get 1.6's when launching at 14-1500 rpm.
The convertor is a 1k P/I 2600 stall, but from what i have seen, no one is getting much out of convertors..no matter the brand on a gen 2.
When i had the stocker, i could get mid 1.7's but with 4#'s less boost and a lot less tourqe.
