Came across a great deal on Electric fans and Throttle body, just some concern....
Hey I've got the mod bug, hope I don't get any body else with it that doesn't want it... I remember about a year ago when I said to myself (b4 i got my Lightning) i'd get it and it'll be faster than most sports cars, and ill leave it stock! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
Anyway, I've got the basic set up, chip, filter, pulley and exhaust. I just installed the Factory Tech Valve body today and really enjoy it. I am thinking about going for my 2nd batch of mods and I came across a deal in the classified section all from the same guy for...
Electric fans
Single blade throttle body
JDM's cold air kit with 90 mm mass air and 12" cone filter
and a Drive Shaft loop.
My concern is with the electric fans and the throttle body, I'm really freeing up/making some horsepower with both those mods aren't I? I am currently around 400 horse at the motor and 500 feet pounds of torque correct? I am real concerned about my motor and trans both. I've said b4 I have a mod friendly dealership, I just don't want to test out our friendship. Ya know what i mean? I think im about right where i need to be to get into the 12's. This 2nd batch of mods I don't know if I'll feel like i did the chip and 4#pulley. Also I've read into the trans' in our trucks are great, but when you start getting into the power/torque they can go. I think im flirting with that with MAX torque out of factory trans with the mods i have now! Later down the road i was thinking about the monster box, just not now....
I am just looking for answers to some questions, what should I expect from this single blade throttle body and electric fan set up. A lot more air will be flowing through anything else? And the fans will keep the motor cooler, and I'll get the Cobra R water pump... Anything else I need to worry about? As far as a re-burn I'll get one for sure because I’m upping from an 80 mm mass air to a 90 and then the throttle body will be swapped out, so I'll end up getting a re-burn.
To sum it up, I can either A. Keep what i have now and be more than happy with my set up. I think with a good 60 foot times, and traction bars I will be well into the 12's. That's all i thought i wanted, was to "run a 12" . Or I can b get this 2nd batch of mods (a $1200 set up) for about $900 and be on my way to maken’ my truck a race truck. But that's something I’ve been thinking about doing.
I know just by strappen’ on fans and a throttle body, that doesn't mean its a race truck by all means. I’m just saying sometimes with mods, if you do one thing, it leads to 3. From there i want to get a set of Slicks. I've always wanted this hood. That's for sure mainly because it doesn't effect my reliability. But Its just something down the road I’m doing. Then slowly but surely i am thinking about building my motor... I'd start with getting the Monster box transmission , a built short block, and then a Kenne bell blower.... But all that's years down the road and really has nothing to do with this decision, but in a way it does. I guess no matter how many times i say "I'm done" or after... THEN I’m done doing stuff to my truck...." it all comes down to what you want to get out of it. And i can't answer that right now...
So if anyone can jump in and offer ANY advise I'd appreciate it. Thank you as always, Shane

you're probably not near 400/500 (you're running a 4# right?).
e-fan will free up hp. the stock fan weighs a TON! freeing up that moving mass will help out a lot. plus the fan itself is very practical for quick cool-downs at the track. just make sure you dont drain the battery (let it go too long)...
the tb won't net you much rwhp. more throttle response and that cool hissing sound is about all you'll get. like the factory tech vbody, it just adds to the pleasure of driving the truck, not any gains in rwhp or torque...
hope this helps.
P.S: i got my efan, e pump, and single blade TB for less than 800. check the prices on all that stuff from a vendor and you'll know how much i saved

The concern isnt how much horsepower i have now, but how can i not be near 400.... stock is 365. I think i picked up more than 35 horse out of the chip, mass air meter, cone filter, 4# lower pulley, and the silver bullet cat back exhaust. I know you dont get much out of anything except the pulley, but it all ads up and i think they work well together. If I'm not at 400hp, thats fine I am very happy with the set up i have i was saying.
I was just looking for more info and what to expect from the future mods. You dont think i should have a problem with reliability even with these mods? That was my main concern.
I appreciate your reply. I think I am going to go through with the deal. If I got what I'm getting from this guy new from a tuner, the electric fans, throttle body, drive shaft loop, jdm's cold air kit with 90 mm mass air and a single program diablo chip it would be more than $1,300 right? So i guess $900 isnt that bad. He's throwing in the diablo chip becuase i always wanted a dual program... But i got my single a while ago first.
So the electric fan is a good mod, you said it will free up horsepower, and the throttle body increases the throttle response. Thats great and i think they will work well together.
Did you install the fans yourself? And any more info on the water pump. I see its $105 from jdm, but install on that also?
I was wondering if that was a days work or how hard that was. He said it will come with a fan relay switch also...
Thanks again for the reply, Shane

I wouldn't count on the stock H.P. being 360 H.P. Dynoes are good to get a "feel" for gains and maybe some A/F ratios.
There are different ways that a dyno can alter your results. Just a couple are...what correction factors are used, what type of dyno...
You should be more than safe adding the mods you mentioned.
And most important of all....consult with your tuner about mods and how your tune is affected. Do what he says...don't try to nickle and dime the tuner over spark plugs and who can burn me the cheapest type things.
Rocks
P.S. I just read your post again...your getting a chip from "some guy"?????????? Be sure and book mark all the blown engine threads...your going to need them.

I got my waterpump from MAD at http://www.madenterprise.com/f150.htm He should have the underdrive pulley for it by now too.
03LightninRocks: is 360 hp over rated for the 2000's? I dont know really other than what i've hear or read. I have never put my truck on a dyno. I just thought 2000's "came factory with 360 or 365" at the motor.
And as far as the chip, its a single program superchip. I am sending it to JDM and if they can reburn it i will use it, otherwise i have my Diablo still and will use that after a reburn. Im not just gonna pop the chip in my truck and go... After a reburn with my mods, i should be ok as long as the chip works.

Oh...I thought you had gotten a dyno that said that. Most are dynoing around 340 or so at the rear wheels.
But again...most of the dynoes are going to show a bit high for a Lightning.
JDM will take care of you...consult with them on the phone about the mods your adding...then follow their recommendations on tune, plugs and gaps.
Most of the fellows in our area go to the dyno after getting a reburn or even after making mods to check the A/F ratios...
Alot of us around here go every now and then just to be sure we are still running a safe tune.
I also thought you were going to just pop in the chip that guy was selling you, but it sounds like your on the right track.

Thank you Rocks for the 2nd reply. I live in Illinois and a place 2 minutes away from my home just got a dyno so i am thinking about going this summer. The chip, yeah im having it reburned and the horsepower i was talking about at the motor near 400....
are we on the same track now?
Thanks, Shane

Cool.........usually folks are talking rear wheel H.P. around this forum.
On the dyno, be sure they use a wide ban o2 sensor to get the A/F's. Also ask them to print out the graphs so you can email to your tuner. The tuner can then confirm all is good.
Then it's off to the track for the real fun!!!!!!!!!!

No problem Shane...I also just realized you have a 2000 Lightning...I believe those dynoed a bit lower at around 320 H.P. at the wheels. The 2001-2003 are about 20 H.P. more, but that throttle body and MAF will catch you right up.

thats a pic taken from the guy selling me the products. Everything there he is giving to me for $925 shipped.
Electric fans, single blade throttle body, 90mm mass air and 12' filter (jdm cold air kit), drive shaft loop and single program chip. That price sounds more than resonable for those mods right?
Thanks, Shane
