Synthetic oil ?

I have a quick question for everyone. Is it too late to change to synthetic oil in my L? It is a ’00 with 40,000 miles on it. And also I am assuming that Mobile 1 is the best to go with?!?

From: Colorado,
If you know the history of the enging and it has been changed the way it is supposed to, then go for it.

Any name brand fully synthetic is good.

I prefer Amsoil but they are all so close it matters not.

yeah 10w30 summer, 5w30 winter, actually any synthetic except for castrol is a good synthetic....

Mobil 1 (most popular)
Amsoil (actually the best)
Vavoline

those are the 3 i recommend for synthetics.....

all though i think for what synthetic oil is, it's not worth the extra $$$, i mean, when the oil runs through the engine it get's dirty right??? so once it gets dirty it protects the same as a regular oil...... unless your using synthetic gear lube, trans fluid, etc, where no dirt gets in there, sure it helps quite a bit, but i beleive that all oils work the same, doesn't matter if it regular or synthetic, i think us having used synthetic is just a confidence builder for whatever reason.... i know i use synthetic in the cobra all the time, and at least blend in the lightning, but i know in the back of my mind that regular valvoline, or mobil will do just as good of a job as the synthetics. i had a conversation with a heavy machinery mechanic and he was running all this down, and i think he made a good point, the oil is running through the engine and getting dirty, what is the difference in what the synthetic is doing?? it might not dirty as fast, so you can go alittle longer on changes but if you change every 2-3 thousand miles, whats it gonna matter?

but i beleive that all oils work the same, doesn't matter if it regular or synthetic
Actually Synthetics have a higher thermal breakdown than conventional motor oils and they tend to "cling" to the surfaces better so there is less friction at startup. Most of the wear on your motor is at startup believe it or not, so the sooner the oil gets to the bearings and what have you the less wear that takes place. The cleanliness of the oil is dependant on the filtering so if you want to take full advantage of the syn oil you should also be using a premium filter. I still change my oil and filter at 5k kms but you could go longer. If you wanted to keep the syn oil in longer than 5k kms, I would change the filter and then just top the oil back up. BTW most people are only using 5.5l and not the 6l that it says to use. It helps keep some of the oil out of the TB with the 1/2l less. Personally I use a Hastings filter and 5w30 Redline. Just my $.02.
