Stainless can and will rust depending on the material used. 400 series stainless contains carbon which will rust. This is a fairly common material for exhaust systems. 300 series stainless should not look like that. It does no contain carbon and should not develop the red rust. All stainless will corode, to what extent depends on the enviorment it is in and what other materials it is in contact with. The corrosion on 300 stainless will usually show up as a white powdery look. More than likely a 400 series stainless was used on your pipes.

Try loosening all the clamps and repositioning the X-pipe. Those mufflers should almost be stacked on top of each other.

What he said.

When I first installed my system it was not a perfect fit. I had to go back and slide everything up a little more and then re-clamp down. Now it looks great!!, but I should have put the extra attention from the started.

Apply some 3M Chrome and Metal Polish to those Stainless Steel Tips and Mufflers and they will look like new : If you are really ambitious, you could apply it to your whole exhaust system. I would suggest doing this when winter has is over and the roads are cleared of the Salt and Sand.

I did understand that the pipes would not be stainless, but aluminized tubing.
It's a great system, and I know I am an oddball with this issue. It is a top quality system, and I have seen it look good and work well on other Lightnings.
The pictures were taken last night before I washed it off. The truck is rinsed off - both top and bottom - each night before i head home. This winters salt and the fact that we have had few good days has taken its toll on the underside of my truck... never again will it go through a winter.
I am still waiting for a job opportunity to pop up in Chandler, AZ so that may solve my problems

I work at honeywell making apu's and jet engine parts and deal
with a lot of exotic metals. Just what silver-bolt said stainless
steel can rust and will depending on the enviroment. So just
because it says stainless does not mean it won't rust.

Install

installed a full exhaust system from Jim on my father's truck last week. No directions or anything.....the install went flawless......aside from me positioning one of the arms from the lift right in the way of where the tips fit in.

I would say that something is wrong. If Jim is willing to send you a new set of tips, take him up on his offer and compare the new and old ones. If they are the same, i would say that your nott getting the x pipe slip up far enough on the stock midpipes.
