You don't have to change the pan.

I just installed the FT VB this weekend with stock pan. If does help keep the fluid a little cooler but it's not necessary.

I would suggest getting the pan as well....it makes install about 100 times easier. You can then poke a hole in the existing stock panel and let the fluid drain that way. Then next time you doa tranny fluid swap all you have to do is loosen the bolt...it's a cheap mod.

Order from fordpartsonline.com and it'll be a bit cheaper than from your dealer or a tuner. Here's the part #'s :

Deep Sump Trans Pan # F81Z7A194BA $30.52
Tranny Filter - #YC3Z7A098BA $20.12

It was also mentioned that you could get a filter from Autozone I believe....supposed to be the same filter but much cheaper...can't recall the part # tho

I installed the FT VB today as well. I also bought and installed the deep sump pan with the drain plug and the associated filter. I tell you what, I think the best thing about the deep sump pan is the drain plug. While removing the stock pan today I ended up spilling most of the ATF on the floor. My damn transmission funnel flipped over when the fluid came gushing out of the stock pan. I didn't do the old "punch a hole in the pan" trick because I wanted to keep it just in case I ever needed it.
Most everyone I've talked to recently has mentioned something about putting a pan back on with a drain plug or welding a plug in the stock one after I told them that I was installing the FT VB.

Also, learn from me, when the filter pops out all of a sudden there will be another 1/2 quart of fuild to dump out. And, as the directions say, the VB iteslf holds quite a bit of ATF in the wormtrail.
I used a lot of stay-dry today. Right now my neck is killing me from being on the creeper for several hours.

But I have gone for a test ride and she will bark 'em from first to second at WOT. The shift from 2nd to 3rd at WOT is almost as hard if not harder because the tires didn't break loose. I'm going to have to get used to the harder shifting.

I wonder what my wife will say the first time she rides in it...

No, you will use the stock filter with the stock pan. It's always good to change the filter when removing the pan though, I mean why not?, you're in there and it's good maintenance.

Lightbulb Here is my opinion on it.

Heat is the number one cause of trans failures. The more fluid you have the cooler it will run. Every bit helps. Just spend the money(not really that much) and buy the deeper pan.

Also don't be a little girl and poke a hole in your stock pan. Come on most of us are men I think we can deal with a little fluid here and there. It really isn't that hard to drop the pan without making a mess. Plus you can clean out the stock pan and use it for cereal and milk in the morning. Works very well. Goodluck on the swap. -Mat-

I punched a hole in mine. But, I have half a dozen stock ones setting around if I ever need one (free if anyone ever needs one, BTW) and irony of ironies, I'm allergic to MERCON, so I try not to get any on me I can avoid.
