Got my R/C L today.......AHHHH there is a LOT of pieces

I got a really good deal on a new Tamiya 1/10 scale that I could not pass up ($65 shipped).
Now what?

there is a lot of pieces. I guess since I do not have my L for a few more weeks I will be keeping busy.

Any tips?

VINNIE

Actually Vin, the Tamiya TL01 chassis is one of the simplest and most durable RC's out there.

Just take your time, follow the instructions, and work in a ncie, well lit area.

It helps to build on top of a towel to keep stuff from rolling away.

Make sure you use flush cutters or an xacto knife to trim the flashing from the plastic parts, especially the gears.

With the body, take your time and do very very light coats on the inside, gradually building them up to be opaque. If you spray too much at once at get runs, the body is pretty much wrekced, and you can't buy the L body seperate from the kit.

If you have any questions at all that come up while building it, e-mail or IM me. I've been heavily into RC racing the last 4 years, until this L came and now I have a new moneyhole.

I've built 3 of the tl01 chassis-based kits, so anything you need, let me know.

P.S. Wiat until you get a .21 powered 4wd buggy. Talk about fun!

Vinnie

Stop where you are and get the following

Bearing set.
Speed tuned gears
Supspension upgrades
Slicks and rims

Send me an email - Ill pass along the part numbers.

If you get the parts you can assemble the chassis ONCE rather than 3 times like I have.

I found a local kid at a hobby shop that cuts and paints bodies for $15 bucks. You cant buy the paint for that much. Get another body. You CANT buy another Lightning body from Tamiya. HPI makes a flareside body that is pretty close

Lots a fun....

Doug - I get my paint for 3 dollars a can at my local hobby shop. If $15 won't buy paint where you are, I'd thow a fit. Hell I'll do a single color paint job for you for $10!

My local Hobby shop is www.atomichobbies.com

I would defnitely get a nice soft set of slicks. Hpi and proline both make excellent tires. Yokomo also makes really nice ones, as does sorex and others.

Bearing set is a must. Try boca bearings or a duratrax bearing set. www.bocabearings.com or www.towerhobbies.com

In terms of suspension upgrades all the TL01 chassis really needs is a set of oil filled shocks. Tamiya probably makes their own hop-up shock set, and yokomo and HPI make really nice threaded aluminum shocks.

Any others questions, links to parts/hopups, anything at all, just e mail or IM me on AIM.

RC cars are cool!

I'm gonna take some pics of mine and post them for you guys now, I've gotten all worked up and excited LoL.

EDIT: One other thing I just remembered - the tamiya body is 190mm wide as most electric touring car bodies are, but the hpi f150 flareside body is meant for nitro touring cars and is 200mm wide.

Good luck vinnie. the best part about the R/C car is putting it together. RTR....ready to run......cars suck and there is no fun except driving it.

3 cans of paint ( Silver, white ( backer color ) and something else ) at 3 bucks + tax = $14.00 or so ... Plus you have to cut out the body PLUS - the kid does a better job than me. Seems a no brainer to me.

The ONLY Flareside F150 body I could find was the HPI it fits just fine.

Hint from HPI and myself.......use a circle cutter to cut the wheel wells. This one is made by fiskars and it rocks.......

3 cans? One should be plenty to get a nice even coat on a body, unless you're doing more than one color or using flourescent/metallic colors.

The silver one above is mine. DEEP metallic silver. Niether of the 2 metallic silvers was opaque enough to really "coat" the truck. One was just silver flake in clear suspension and the other was smaller silver flake in a barely silver paint..

Came out really good BUT I wasted a ton of money on airbrush system and paint and thinner, brushes etc.
