Just spoke to SVT about plug issue
Personally I'm thinking of saying "screw it" , declaring my mid-life crisis over, trading in the L and going back to this:
I had an LS400 for ten years and not a single thing went wrong with it. It was indestructable.
Here I am now, feeling the need for speed, drop 32K and am constantly afraid to drive it for fear it may implode. It's my daily driver and quite frankly I shouldn't have pause for thought every time I turn the key.
Sorry...had to rant.

I was reading this forum before I bought my '02. After I read alot of the negative threads I decided to pass on the L. One of my friends told me not to worry about it, all forums are bitch and moan sessions. I bought the L and have not had one problem in 7600 miles. I traded my '99 Lincoln Towncar, it had 47k miles and had only been to the dealer once, for a small rearend leak. I never went on the Lincoln Towncar forum, do they even have one? Maybe the climate control malfunctions often, the heated seats stay on during the summer, the sunroof sticks in the open position. I don't know what the common problems were with that car. I just know mine was fine. There are somethings that could have been done better on the L. No question the heads should have more threads and the fog lights are defective. But I still think people are over reacting to the problems others have had. People who have launched a plug or thrown a rod, are very much in the minority. Over 20,000 L's are on the road, if 1,000 have spit a plug, that is only 5%. I will not fear driving my L.
My plug on my stock block did not launch without warning. I had plenty of previous exhaust-leak noise warning, but did not get it tended to in time, which is my own fault.
While I should not have to routinely check to see if the plugs are backing themselves out, it was not just one day it shot out. I had an exhaust-leak noise that let me know somethign was wrong.
The day I blew it out, I was actually going to ask JDM to take a quick look at it (it blew out on my way down to their swap meet).

"Well I work for Ford warranty and I can tell you it is a problem. Vehicles under base warranty with SP blowing out of head for the month of Dec. 02 437 Jan. 03 282 at one point last june we hit 900 cliams for the month.
After 36,000 miles the numbers drop but are still a problem. The lightning has been the vehicle I see most often but regular F-150's have had it happen too. Expedition as well."

I just purchased a new 03L and I hope that this plug problem is overstated. If I had any idea of moding my truck the posts have made me think otherwise. I have been a chevy man most my life and the posts have made me wonder if I should have changed!!!
Unplug the injector and the coil!!!!
Reason being you do not want to wash the cylinder walls with raw fuel. The cylinder will not go dry it will still be lubed up with oil. When these new cars go into limp home mode they shut down the injector which will turn the cylinder into a air pump which in turn will help cool the engine for a short time.Hope this helps. You probally won't do any damage if you leave it plugged in for a short time(a few miles) but be safe.I also am paranoid about this and find myself listening everytime I pull into the car port.I wonder if my SVT dealer will charge me to check my plug while the truck is still under warranty.

Hehehe...no worries man....I didn't actually gather the data....
I like to see peoples reactions to that.....most don't know the true numbers, they just see what's posted here. Which is obviously a very low % of the true #'s
