iac cleaning

i cleaned my iac today just cause i was having some erratic idle at times. but my question is how can this thing get dirty? the thing was black, looks like carbon. 2 things cross my mind either egr gas is dirtying this thing up or its oil from the intake? i think the second choice is unlikely seeing how this happens on other ford products as well. someone enlighten me?

You may(?) be right about the EGR.....all IACs get dirty.

EGR is the culprit. This dates back all the way back to the 5.0 days. I like to clean mine every 6months.

I know this is an old post, but how do you clean the IAC?
