Truck doesn't downshift from 30 mph
Does yours? If I'm going around 30 mph and floor it, it seems like sometimes it will down shift into first gear and haul a$$, but sometimes it doesn't go into first. I just lost a race to a jetta because it didn't downshift. That's humiliating! It also doesn’t seem like my truck has too much pick up around the 30 to 50 mph zone. If I juice it anywhere under 30, first gear pulls real hard, and if I juice it at 50 it pulls hard in second but in-between he doesn't want to move. Is this common among stock trucks or could I have a problem. If anybody remembers when I first got it 3 weeks ago it had a problem with shutting off when it idled. Also here recently I reported hearing what sounded like an exhaust leak when I even just slightly touch the gas when going around 40 mph. Anything I should have checked out, or am I just being paranoid?

when i "juice" it around 30 I go sideways. :D
Even if you didn't down**** methinks you still should've taken a jetta...unless of course it was modded the sh*t out of... |
30-40 it should down shift and go like hell... that is one of the sweet spots, or if in the passenger seat the "oh chit" spot. I would have it checked out. Good luck with it.

I don't know for sure but I'm pretty certain he wasn't heavily modded, may not even have been modded at all. Truck really doen't feel like it pulls that hard around that speed I'm thinking I may really have a problem.

do you have a chip? your tuner can/does program your gear kick down. maybe for some reason the program got messed up or the tuner did it on purpose?
|
nope no chip, truck is 100% stock
|
If you get a chip, it'll take care of that problem:devil: :rocker:

If you have an 01-03, the factory WOT downshift for the 2-1 is set at 21.5 mph. That means the truck will not kick back into 1st gear at WOT over 21.5 mph. The reason for this, is there is a calibration issue that Ford could not resolve. If you raise that value to a higher mph, then the truck will downshift into first, but not upshift back into second, and just tach out. On the 99-00s, it's not an issue.

ohhh snapppp!!!
dude, get that thing checked out....a slight exhaust leak could end up being a plug launching (jesus christ not again). Could also be why you feel no power, if the plug is loose that is. Get it checked out immediately and make sure they check the plugs. Other than that, maybe a TPS or MAF issue, any ses lights on???

No ses light, and a week ago I had it in at the dealer and asked them to scan the computer for any codes. They told me that it had not registerd a full cycle yet. I have no idea what that means but he said usually it is like that until you get below the first half tank of gas. I was already on my third tank and the truck had 971 miles on it. He said he didn't know why it was like that but that it must still be adapting. Is this weird?
Thanks for all the replies |
did they mean drive cycle? in case you were wondering a drive cycle (i think this is right) is over 60mph for 10 min
|
If they meant drive cycle it still wouldn't make sense. Of the 971 miles over 500 of them were over 60 mph.

Sal is right,These trucks DONT downshift at more than 20mph.My 99 would not,my 00 would not but i do notice inder certain conditions,My 02 will up to 30 mph.
A chip will take care of that! 40mph downshifts sideways, shift into second with a FTvalve body sideways and the lightning becomes much more FUN! Once you hit the go pedal at 30-40 you are gong 70 mph before its controllably strait. One thing I disagree with sal on it that the 99/00s dont have this problem. This is a very common problem. No trucks downshift on their own,Specially the older ones. Both of mine were the same. |

Ray you misread my post a bit. The "problem" I was referring to, is if you raise the 2-1 downshift mph with a chip on an 01-03, you can have a problem with the truck not upshifting back into 2nd after it's kicked down into 1st. On the 99-00s, we raise the 2-1 downshift as high as 37mph with no problems. The factory setting is 26 mph so the 99-00s will actually downshift to 1st from a bit higher mph stock.
