Exclamation Sooo not cool...!

Ok, to try and sum up...

Well a few months ago, some of you may remember my truck was stolen.
It was a Black 2000, and was recovered wrecked, but the dude went to jail.

Well. I was holding off on this until I at least had a picture to show, BUT, I replaced it with another one!

Just picked up a 2000 "L" in silver which is the color I wanted in the first place last Friday!
Beautiful truck!
21,400 original miles, owned by a retired F.F. from Cali.

He added the following:
Magnaflow muffler (Sounds awesome!)
Lowered 2/1 (Not sure what kit yet?)
Air bag suspension (To haul around a couple of his Harleys)
Spayed in Bedliner to match the truck

Here's the best part...
When he lived in Cali. he worked at a Co. called Powertrain Dynamics, well C&L used his truck to beta test a new MAF for him, the only thing they asked was to use his truck as a guinea pig, and dyno the results, he then got to keep the meter!

Well stock the truck dynoed at 334HP/ 434 torque!
After the meter... 367HP/445Trq !
This is with only the meter, and a conical filter, no chip, nothing else!
Ok, the best part of this, if you look in MM&FF, Sept. 2001 issue, pg. 108, there is the write up , and my only picture so far of the truck!!

Ok, so everything is kick A##, and going great, got the truck we always wanted, has good mods... Until today!

So I'm driving home today, just turn right to get on the freeway, and Boom!!

(Funny thing is with all the posts lately I was just thinking about this!!)

Not sure of the firing order, but the third plug back on the drivers side, decided to eject itself!

I couldn't find the da$% thing at first, but after fishing around in the hoses and wires, sure enough the coil was out and the plug was actually still in the boot.

My biggest concern is what else besides the coil being broken, and the boot coming apart should I be concerned with?
Is the head toast, or did the plug just work it's way out?
The plug is complete BTW, the electrode, and the tip are all there, so nothing is on top of the piston drawing a new design in it or anything... It is on it's way to the dealer to get looked at tomorrow.

I know a lot of you are seeing this exact issue quite often lately, so I am curious what repairs you may have encountered due to this happening?

Sorry for the huge post, thanks for reading, and helping out!

Depressed new owner

sorry to hear

unfortunately, this is an on going problem that seems to be popping up more and more.

You will get a new head. Supposably ford has new heads that has 8 threads to hold the plug, rather than the original 4 thread design. Chances are you will get the 4 thread but make mention of it. Some dealerships seem to come up with info and new parts better than others. Good luck!!!

I blew the same plug. It sucks man.......sucks a lot. I am beginning to get sick everytime I read these posts. Seems like a lot of them lately no>??? Does you truck still have a warranty>??? If it was bought as a leftover you might get lucky. I would check with the dealer first. If you need a head job and have no warranty I would consider having some1 other then the dealer doing it since dealers are outrageous with their prices. Goodluck. -Mat-

Thanks for the advice...

Tallimeca: Thanks for the good will, yeah from what I have read it sounds as though it will be the same replacement.
I am going to ask anyways, but I'll let you all know what happens.

SVT150: Yes, fortunately, it is still under factory Warr.
I was going to skip out on getting an extended one, but now I am thinking the $1500.00 might be worth it!

Rob: Yes I know what you are saying, this does seem to be getting a bit rediculous! 6+ years, and still no real solution...?

We will see what happens.

so i have a ? now...

does his plug problem have to do with the no threads??? or does it have to do with maybe he's got more power than the plugs can handle?? (if he had stock plugs).

i wonder if im ok with NGK's torqued to 13ft lbs......

Mat- did you get a new head? was that before or after you changed your plugs?

We don't think it's any 'plug' per se? It is the 4-5 plug thread heads. My theory; the(not yours necessarily) plugs are tightened too much and the soft, aluminum threads are stretched and weakened.

D/k about your 13 ft. lbs(I think that's the correct torque?), but I followed Sal's advice and ran them down snug plus 1/16th of a turn more.

a 16th turn past what? hand tight? no anti-seize right? I'm paranoid about changing them...

Drkone, which dealer did you take it to? Just curious. Other than the plug problem, sounds like you got the truck you want. Hope to see you toolin' around sometime.

A little good news...

...My truck is done already!
Pretty sure they didn't replace the head witha a revised one. I will ask the service advisor, when I go to pick it up what he thinks about the future.

Kingpin: Earnhardt's believe it or not! Don't really care for them, but it was the closest to where I broke down.
I wanted to take it to sanderson, they are supposedly more "MOD friendly" but I didn't want to come out from the east valley to get it when it was done.

And oh yeah, the color is great! I like the new DSG too, but that was a little more than my budget!

I usually am driving around Chandler area, but occassionally go to Firebird, or Speedworld... Maybe I'll see ya out there!

Ok, so final results are the following:

Truck was done in two days, and no sign of the work done left behind (IE: dirty seat, hand prints, ect.)

New head of the same type, and ALL plugs have been retorqued to spec.

Asked the service advisor about any future use of the revised heads, he kind of looked at me strangely.
He didn't really know anything about the new heads.
I asked if he sees a lot of Lightnings with this issue, and he said no, and that it is mostly the V-10 models!!

So it looks as though NONE of the 2V heads are safe?!

One other note, not sure how much this would cost, but it was three pages long!
