Differential Cover Gasket

Has anyone bought one from a Auto Parts store? Or is this a dealer only item?? All are the same from 99 up right?

I've installed many gearsets in my time, and don't ever remember seeing a gasket for the diff. Blue RTV always worked for me along with torqueing the bolts correctly.

I'm not getting into a gear oil debate, but Ford calls for the 75-140 synthetic only gear oil for these axles.

there are alot of arguements in the aftermarket both for and against synthetic. but we really don't see gear oil related failures on these trucks. BTW, that oil is expensive. I think over the counter is like $25 dollars per quart?

as for the Friction Modifier...

did you replace the clutches?

if so then you should have soaked them in friction modifier overnight. and yes, I'd add a bottle (I think they call for 2).

if you are reusing your original clutches (have already been soaking in friction modifier mixed gear oil for as long as your truck has been alive, I'd say don't add it. I didn't put any back in mine, and I rarely add it in stangs. just my .02

friction modifier's only purpose is to keep your clutches quiet (by slipping) during turns.

hope this helps.

I didn't say you CAN't go buy from the store. I just said that Ford calls for Motorcraft synthetic 75-140. You may find an acceptable replacment gear oil of the same weight. in fact many people swear by other oils such as amsoil and redline and other "aftermarket" products like that. so that's up to you. in my truck I'd use the recommended product. but of course, it's also the easiest thing for me to get.

are you doing this today?

if you come by the shop tomorrow I'll give you a few quarts of the synthetic ford oil if you want it.

IF I go back out today and the dealership is open I may be able to get a few quarts today, but i'm not sure if they are open today or not.

There's no gasket. Asked the guy who replaced a rear wheel stud to be sure and seal up the rear end good cause I didn't want any leaks. Well there's an oil puddle in the garage. I bought one of those pans with an o-ring in it and will put it in soon. They charged me something like $150 just for the lube! When I have my gears changed soon, the renouned "Hooper's Rear Ends" says they don't use synthetic. And I think I'll limit the modifier to just 1 bottle too.

the who???

Ford says that you need to use 75-140 synthetic in the rear axle that they designed and built. I'd listen to them first.

having said that, A LOT of aftermarket gear manufacturers say not to use synthetic gear oil. in fact some will go as far as to void any warranty that they offer if they find out that you used synthetic gear oil on their gear sets. However, we rarely see gear or bearing failures on these axles, so I'd say ford's spec is a good one.

Mag-Hytec covers use an O-ring gasket that is cut into the cover. I picked up the gear oil through Mag-Hytec and the price wasn't all that bad. Seems like it was $60 bucks for 6 quarts.
