I gotta say, i agree with others here, these people that ruin the pan are silly. there is absolutly no reason to ruin it. If you can't get a pan off without making a huge mess have someone else do it. Even if you get a tad dirty who cares, it washes off easily.

Once the pan is off, sure drill a hole in it and put a plug in so you can drain...

a new 4x4 pan is like 30-40 bucks the oem one should be cheaper.. save yourself the hassle & poke a hole in it...

be sure to tell us which way you ended up doing it.. i was of the same mind as you.. "save the stock pan"
started to slowly drop it and poured tranny fluid all over the crossmember & ground.. bolted it back up & punched a hole in it.

I already have a garage FULL of "spare" lightning parts. The Stock pan is not one i would waste space on.. I would drill it to save the mess.

could you drill it, when dry, put a tap into it, and just bolt in a stoper?

Phillip thats what i was geting at, ruining the pan though is rediculous. Of course i was also saying that its soo easy to drain a tranny pan without a mess that people shouldnt have to drill or poke holes in the pan to swap them out...

dont' destroy it

you never know. I just loosened all the most, then removed them from the the front. With the rear jacked up, the fluid will drain a bit. Then just hold the pan up, and removed all the bolts except for the side that 's elevated the highest, gently drop the pan, let it drain. The push it up and down the fluid will slosh around and drain. When most of it's out, take the last 3 or 4 bolts off and remove the pan. Took less than 5 minutes and i have a pan if i need it.......for lord knows what. Works good ont he shelf for putting other stock parts in you took off the truck!!!
