The engine build date tag on my '03 L' reads: 03-12-02.

The truck build date on the door jamb reads: 12-02.

Am I correct to presume the engine was built March 12th, 2002?

Seems like this mill sat around for almost nine months before being put in my truck.

Of course the sequence reversed seems more logical as in Dec. 3rd, 2002. Anyone 'round here build date savy?

if it is the tag on the block it might just be the date the block was cast

The tag I'm referring to is the label on the rearmost side of the LH (drivers side) valve cover.

I think that you should read your tag, 03-12-02, as follows: 03- third day of the month, 12- month of December, 02- year 2002. I just took a look at mine and I interpret it to be dd/mm/yy.

 

 

That was my first interpretation of the tag but when I peeped it again today during my afternoon drooling ritual I second guessed it.
