STORY 2: Sold Stang, Got pulled by STATE TROOPER, and DMV/bank nightmare.
STORY 2: Sold Stang, Got pulled by STATE TROOPER, and DMV/bank nightmare.
WARNING: LONG STORY DONT READ UNLESS YOU ARE REALLY BORED
what a day. First of all, I've been advertising my stang for sale for a few weeks. It was supposedly sold to a guy in Wisconsin, but he didn't feel the need to send a deposit, so last night some 16 year old kid showed up at my house and told me he wanted the car.
he was going to trade in his '96 Lexus SC400 in at Carmax and bring me all of the money for the stang at work today. Great! I began to search for the title last night. I have moved about 4 times in 4 years, and I have somehow missplaced my Title to the car!
I go to work this morning and tell them that I need to go to DMV and get a duplicate so I can sell the car today! work was slow anyway.
For non VA folks, our governor has closed down many of the DMV branches throughout the state as part of an effort to fix the budget.
if you go to the DMV now, you have to drive out of the way to find a branch that is open, and when you get there, you can plan on making a day (or at least a morning) of it.
I drive for nearly 20 minutes looking for a parking space because EVERY SINGLE spot is full. there must be a mile of empty unoccupied curbing surrounding the parking lot that is all signed and painted yellow "NO PARKING TOW AWAY ZONE". they even have some little joker walking around in the parking lot (NOT in a uniform mind you) reporting to the people inside when somebody parks in a "non parking" area. I'll also tell you that since this SOB was not wearing a uniform I followed him around the lot thinking he was another citizen looking for his car and getting ready to leave the lot and I might get his space! there were 10 cars circling the building waiting for a spot.
I finally get to go inside and get a number and seat. to my surprise, it is only about 30 mins before they call me to the counter! I had two goals at DMV today, one to order my ZO6 THIS plates for the Lightning, and also to get a duplicate title so I could sell the stang. The plate is no prob, but my stang still shows a lein from a bank that I haven't sent a dime to in nearly 3 years. I got my original loan from "mainstreet bank" which was bought or merged with"hanover bank" which was bought or merged with "BB&T". anyway, when hanover bank closed or merged, they never bothered to tell anybody that they didn't hold my title anymore or that I don't owe them anymore money.
the lady at DMV "Iris" tells me to call the bank and get a fax sent over indicating that I don't owe them anything. no prob, I call the BB&T where I had my account. they tell me that since it is Sat. I'll have to call another branch where they have a loan officer. so I drop my last .50cents into the phone and dial the other number.
I get to speak to Gene Jones. some hee haw old fart of a banker that really knows how to **** a person off over the phone.
I explain my situation to Gene and gave him the information that he needed (he did his best to make this as difficult as possible by making stupid comments and acting as though I was the first person that had ever asked him to use the fax machine).
thankfully in just a few minutes Iris got a fax on plain white paper stating that I didn't owe bb&t any money.
great except that the lein shows as hanover bank (acquired by bb&t) and he didn't send the fax on any kind of official bank letterhead.
I get some more change from Iris and call gene up again. I explain that I really appreciate it, but that Iris needs to see the letter on BB&T bank official letterhead and he needs to add info stating that BB&T had indeed acquired Hanover bank and that I didn't owe EITHER of them any money.
at this point Gene begins to laugh at me and tells me that the DMV workers aren't the only ones that don't want to be working on a Saturday, and that they are only requesting this info because they are mad about being at work?
he says they could easily call his branch and verify the info.
I tell him that I'll ask them to call him, but for now could he fax over something on company paper. he acts like I've asked him to part the red sea and says, "It's going to be AWHILE" because, and I quote, "THIS ISNT THE ONLY THING I'VE GOT TO DO TODAY YOU KNOW!" after this, he laughs loudly for what had to be at least 30-45 seconds.
there is no way I can explain the attitude that Gene gave me over the phone and equally there is no way that I can explain how angry I became with Gene.
I'm thinking to myself, this is the type of thing that makes people walk into a place and open fire!
trying to maintain my composure because I still need this man to help me out with the paperwork so I can sell my car today. I thank gene and tell him how much I appreciate all of his help.
I the went back to Iris and told her to keep an eye on the fax because gene is sending another.
I also mention that he'd prefer if she just called him. So Iris was nice enough to call gene and talk with him. the a-hole had the nerve to get *****ty with DMV and tell her that he'd send the fax "sometime today"!
I sit and wait. a half an hour later, iris tells me that she has received the fax and we are ready to go.
I get my title straight and thank iris and leave.
I arrive at work a full 3 hours later, to find out that the kid buying my car and his father have come and gone. I missed them. and, carmax would only give them $8k for their lexus and they don't have all of the money! they want to give a deposit and pick the car up later (means I didn't have to waste my morning at DMV and dealing with Gene Jones).
I get in touch with kid via phone and he asks if he can take the car for a test drive a short distance to his mom's work to show it to her.
at this point I should mention that said 16yr old kid while at my home last night told me that his liscense was suspended.
hello, unknown 16yr old stranger wants me to hand over keys to my car knowing that he has NO LISCENSE!
he reassures me that his liscense isn't suspended, just RESTRICTED. he can drive to/from school and work, and since he's at work, he thinks this will be OK to do.
I tell him NO WAY. but if he needs to show the car to his parents, I'll drive over there.
on the way over we are discussing the speedo being about 10% off due to the tires and gears. "for example right now we are going about 66mph even though the speedo only reads 60".
it's about this time that I notice a strange clump of cars about a half mile ahead in the oncomming lanes. instantly I see that they are clumped together because there is a state trooper leading the group doing radar and nobody wants to pass him! I realize that I'm still doing 66 in a 45 zone!
I immediately put the Baer brakes to work hard! there was a curve in the road, so I got down to speed before his radar pointed in my direction, but I see him do a U-turn in front of me and I think he must have caught somebody else. I slowly pass him BELOW the speed limit and right away, he gets behind me.
you know what's next. I see him running my plates on his in car computer.
the kid is watching the cop and forgets to give directions, so as we are approaching a stop light, he tells me at the last minute that we have to turn here, right now! there is enough time to get into the turning lane without looking overly dramatic about the manuever. unfortunately, the trooper swerves over right behind me.
now the blue lights. I pull over and cut the car off. he approaches the car with caution and one hand on the gun, most likely because his little in car 'puter let him know that i'm carrying a concealed handgun in the car.
he doesn't mention speeding, but does ask me if I know where my front plate is?

of course I do , it's in my garage, I haven't used a front plate in nearly 4 years!
he is really looking the car over trying to find something wrong. he askes for a liscense and registration, but due to the 5point harnesses and tight recaro's I can't get my wallet and have to ask to step out of the car. when I get out, he makes a comment that my tire tread depth looks a little low:

he was being smart, because the tires have NO tread left, they are as smooth as racing slicks.
luckily before I set out, I had printed up a bill of sale paper for the kid's folks to sign. i instruct the kid to hand them to me quickly. i give them to the trooper and tell him that this is my drag car and that I never drive it on the street, but that we are literally on the way to do the sale transaction when he pulled us.
anyway, he tells me to get back into the car and wait. I just know he is coming back with a stack of tickets.
to my amazement he comes back and says he is going to give me a warning!

state troopers RARELY give warnings around here.
he leans in and tells the kid that if he buys the car he better get new tires and a front plate.
this silly *** kid starts telling the trooper that he is going to use North Carolina plates and that he won't be putting a front plate on the car! uggggh. sonny, please don't argue with the nice officer while he's in the middle of letting me off the hook!
the trooper ignores him and walks back to his car and pulls off.
thanks for small favors!
so at the end of the day, the car is sold (or at least has a nice deposit on it) and I got no traffic tickets, and I have one bank branch managers number to call on monday morning to talk to about that moron Gene.
I guess it could have been a lot worse.
g'night all, sorry for the long post. it was just a crazy day. guess you had to be there/here.
later,
chris

sounds like a day in the life of me
only difference is Gene would have tried to send the fax, we wouldn't have got it, i would have called back and the fax machine would have been broken and he was leaving in 15 minutes so i couldn't even go pick it up.
Then while driving the mustang with the kid, it would have broken down or got a flat, or the kid's parents wouldn't have let him buy it!!!

I know I typed too much.
sorry.
the worst part is that originally I typed more characters than the bulletin board system would allow, it was like 15,000 characters!
I had to shorten it to get it below 10,000 characters so I could post!
what can I say, I'm bored

I have been working on the car since I bought it in '98. click here for details of what's been done
hopefully it sold today though, if not then those people just donated about a grand to my bank account in non refundable deposit form.
I have done basically everything to the car EXCEPT the motor. I was doing a turbo 331 with a manual valve body c4, but I bought my first house this past summer and now with the new L, I've lost the desire to keep dumping money and time into the stang. I love it, but it's one toy too many I guess. the car runs low/mid 13's on the bone stock 90K motor and drag radials. stock right down to the factory headers and air intake box.
I know i a few years I'll be kicking myself in the head. I've put A LOT of time and money into this car. it is really pretty in person.
LOL at tallimeca, yep, the first thing the kid's dad said when we pulled up was, <sarcastically> "I bet that thing doesn't attract attention from the cops!"
so of course then I had to tell him that the reason we were late meeting him was because we had just gotten pulled over!

I know exactly what you mean vinnie, I remember how I was with my first car at age 16 (1966 mustang coupe with 3spd tranny and a worn out 200ci straight 6
) I really would have gotten into trouble if I'd had a car like the '93.
at least it's not crazy fast though, then engine is stock.
I tried to talk to him on the way home and explain not to show off and take it really easy untill he learns how to drive it and stuff, but you know how kids are (I can't believe I just said that, I must be officially old now
). hopefully between his folks and my advise, he'll listen to some of it.

P.S. LOL, I can see him driving to school now with his restricted license:

When i got it it was primer. All new bodypanels. The car was straight as an arrow.Had it painted burgundy.Put about $7,000 into the car. That was in 1982. Usual mods,wheels,radio,etc...it was real nice right up to the day it was stolen.
