STORY 1: VALENTINE 1 radar detector and STATE TROOPER w/ VG2
Story 1:
Hi guys, as many of you know I work at a Ford dealership. Well, we happen to work on alot of police cruisers, both for the state of virginia (or is it commonwealth
) and for the local Henrico county police. So anyway, I am on a friendly basis with more than a few cops in my area.
yesterday we had a State cruiser in the shop doing some routine maintenance and here comes the Trooper walking through the shop looking for me.
He says, "Hey Chris, did you ever get that Lightning you've been waiting for?"
I tell him yes and would he like to see it. So we go out to check it out. Of course the first things he notices are the lack of front liscense plate (illegal here in VA), the WAAAAY to dark tint and totally illegal tint across the top of the windshield!
he really likes the truck and we go back inside.
Once inside I asked him what the deal is with Radar Detectors in VA. For those of you who don't know, it is illegal to use them here. IMHO, this is a VERY GOOD THING, because it means that for the most part, there is no LASER speed inforcement in VA. Since 90+% of the drivers on the road don't have detectors due to the illegality, the cops just use radar and those of us with detectors have an even greater advantage.
a few of you will remember that I received my truck on Saturday Dec 28th, and on Sunday 29th I got pulled over for the detector hanging in my window. the cop saw it plain as day which is why I got the window tint. BTW, that cop didn't ticket me, in fact he mainly pulled me because he wanted to look at the new colored L! we talked and he had a stang too.
anyway, I was curious as to what the punishment is for having/using a radar detector in VA. so I ask him can they confiscate or destroy the thing? I don't want my $400+ radar detector being taken away.
He replies that normally they only make note of the serial # on the detector, write it on the ticket and you have to pay a $65 fine. IF they do confiscate the detector, they are required to return it to you at your court date. sheewww, good news.
So then he brings up the VG2, this is a device used to "detect" the use of radar detectors here in VA. the cops can tell if you are running a detector and then pull you over and issue you a ticket.
Almost all of the detectors on the market ADVERTISE that they are undetectable. however the trooper informed me that there is ONLY ONE detector that he has found to actually be undetectable.
he asked me what type of detector I have? I reply "V1". He says, "That's it, those are the only ones I haven't been able to detect."
he then asks, "Do you happen to have it here?"
"Of course I do, why, do you want to see it?"
"yes" he says, "go get it".
Long story short, we took my V1 into the shop and took it right over and got inside his car and plugged the detector into the STATE POLICE cruiser's power outlet and fired the V1 up.
Even inside the same car with the VG2, the "detector detector" VG2 did not know that the V1 was on.
He then picked the VG2 up off of his dashboard and pointed the V1 and VG2 at each other approximately 5 inches apart and still nothing.
The V1 was TOTALLY undetectable even at a range of 5 inches!!!
He laughed and said, "pretty nice". then gave me my detector back!
Not all cops are bad guys, it just sucks that most of the time, when we (as auto enthusiasts) have to deal with them, it' for a traffic infraction and we only see the "strictly business" side of them.

chris

Great story
Most of the time, the Police will sit in the median waiting for a bunch of cars to go by. As they are flying past, he will light them up with his radar gun. The first car he sees slaming on the brakes gets a free ticket for the illegal detector. Police work is so simple

Hey Chris,
When I drive from GA to Virginia to see my brother, I always leave my V1 detector on. I have the power cord hard wired in each of my vehicles to conceal the cord. My windows are tinted in both vehicles and the V1 mounted on the sun visor on the drivers side.
I got my V1 being updated at Valentine right now, should be back at my house when I get back home the end of this week.

Chris,
I got hit for mine when I had to put my work van in the shop and I had a rental Blazer, I had the detector on the back seat and got pulled and he saw it, LOL how dumb is that?. Its a $50 dollar fine and they didnt take mine....
Never the less, as you said some cops are cool some are not. Like the state cop that got me last month for my PSP Stickers, that ended up costing me $150 total.
Glad you know some cool ones!!
