Talking Dyno'd my 03L last night

What's up guys. A friend of a friend just opened up a dyno / speed shop in Scottsdale. It's a new all wheel drive dyno from a company called Dyno Dynamics in Australia. Anyway he invited me and my friend over to make a couple of pulls.

First up was my friend's 99 SS with lid, filter and pulleys. I expected about 300 rwhp. It laid down 270 rwhp and 290 tq.
My friend wasn't happy. The shop owner explained that this dyno shows numbers lower than both the Dynojet and Mustang dyno. He changed the correction factor to 1.18 and it changed the numbers to 305 rwhp and 328 tq.

Next up was my L. 200 miles on the odo, only Sal's filter kit installed. I told them about Chris dynoing his 03L and getting mid 340's rwhp and 420's tq. With the low numbers my friend put down I was expecting low 300's.

With no correction factor it came out to 342 rwhp and 400 tq. Very confusing. He had a wideband AF meter hooked up. I was hoping to get a printout for Sal as he's doing a chip for me right now. He didn't have the module though to give me a copy. I did see that it got down to 11.2 at wot redline. I will be going back in about 2-3wks with my Bassani catback, chip, 4# pulley and FTVB installed. Now to figure out what's wrong with my friend's SS. I see Autotap in his future. All input is welcome.
Thanks!! Jeff

Impressive!! after your mods you should be able to join the 400/500 club fo sheezee. 200 miles on the odo makes it that much more impressive.

I'd have an issue with randomly applied correction factors to make a customer happy... your uncorrected numbers sound much closer to a healthy L.

LS1s vary widely, depending on how hungover the assemblers were that day, so your friend likely just has a lo-po one.

Find another dyno. End of discussion.

To make it clear, the shop owner was not trying to pump my friend's numbers up with the correction factor. He was just trying to compare it to dynojet numbers. My friend and I had an idea of what the numbers conceivably should have been for his car. My last car before my white L was a 2000 SS. In our experiences we have seen similar cars put down around 300+ rwhp. The owner was just trying to substantiate the differences in his dyno vs. dynojet and the mustang dyno. My friend accepted that his numbers were low when my truck hit spot on what it should be. This gentleman has a very nice facility and a great head on his shoulders. He obviously still has some learning to do about his new dyno and software.

that correction factor is WAYYYY off. If you used the same correction number (1.18) on your numbers you would be seeing 403 rwhp!!! unless a filter kit adds about 50 hp to the wheels, i think that number he used was way off.

however on the flipside, 270 rwhp for a 99 ls1 w/ those mods sounds a bit low. i would expect something in the 300s for sure...

Thanks for the reply cyntaxx. That's what so confusing. I'm not worried about my numbers as much as my friend's. I'm going to call X-Treme Motorsports here in town. They have a Dynojet and do all of the C5's and F-bodies. I'll probably head over there when all of my go fast stuff is on.
Thanks, Jeff

Hey Kinpin, where is this shop located? I'm moving to Scottsdale this summer, and I don't know of any speed shops in that area.

Jeff, if you plan to use your friends new dyno in the future, what I would do is try to get on his dyno AND a Dynojet on the same day and compare numbers. This was he can base YOUR correction factor off the Dynojet's numbers and his dyno will be more accurate for you to compare numbers. Any dyno is fine though if you are just using it to compare the "gains" from new parts. Part XYZ should give the same increase in hp on any brand dyno, so the starting numbers aren't all that important. But if you want to compare numbers with the rest of the world, you'll need to figure our a proper correction.

LAST50, the name of the shop is Dyno-Comp. Their website is www.dyno-comp.com
Their address and directions are on there. Look me up when you get here.

Sal, thanks for your input. I'm not really caught up in flexing dyno numbers. As you said I just want a consistent baseline so I can dyno again with your chip and the rest of my mods and see what I picked up. Sorry I couldn't get AF graphs for you. By the way your wife is really great to deal with. She really seems to know her stuff. Thanks again I look forward to running your new program.
