Caution when installing 01-02 tail lights on 99-00

I bought a used set of 01-02 tail lights recently. I went to install them tonight and noticed that there was a place on each light where the bottom bolt had punctured the case and made a peice of the chrome plastic inside pop out. I caught this while i was cleaning them up. dissapointed... i decided to go ahead and install them and see how they look. They look great!

When i bolted them on with the factory bolts, sure enough the bolts came right up to the surface of the plastic and would have done the same thing had it not already been damaged. Surly this has happend to someone else. I have never seen a thread about this problem.

If you install 01-02 tail lights on a 99-00, plan on either getting shorter bolts or adding a couple of washers before bolting them down.

They used a couple washers as shims. Old problem that rears its ugly head again.

sorry

sorry to hear, luckily i did mine when the posts were flying around the board on what not to do. I just used a couple of washers to take up the difference of about 1/4 of an inch. Kinda ****ty that this happens when you pay such big bucks for the lights huh?

I made the mistake of installing some Lightning tails on my '03 Screw while I had the flu. Just couldn't wait until I felt better to do it. Big mistake.

Had them all installed and tested and was picking up the tools when I noticed the lower screws poking through. DAMN, DAMN, DAMN!!

Worst part is that at that point I remembered reading about this about a month ago.

I have some new ones coming and won't make the same mistake. I would like to try to recoupe some of my money on these punctured tails. What would a reasonable price be for these Genuine Ford parts with those two 'extra' holes?

yeah that sucks and its something that you wouldn't think about unless you knew of the problem

There was a lot of posts when the 01's first came out and everybody with 99/00 where putting the newer tails in their trucks

I did it the easy way, just traded the 99 for an 01
