well, for whatever this is worth.

I installed my new (beefcake used) 6lber this morning along with my other new mods.

I had to run across town to a birthday party and I could barely press the gas pedal without LOTS of audible detonation. I was driving on the highway and if I tried to dip into the throttle, it was BAD.

Note, it was probably a high of 29degrees or so here today.

Tonight I wanted to drive the truck, so I just yanked the chip out.

EVEN COLDER AT NIGHT 16DEGREES RIGHT NOW!

ZERO audible detonation!? WTF?

I'm not saying it's optimal, but it certainly ran just fine (even under WOT) with no chip.

later,
chris

Is it possible that the tunes for the 2003's still need some fine tuning?

They sure got whipped out there mighty fast.

I agreed that you can run WITHOUT A CHIP
But if you can add 30-50 Horse Puppies, and get rid of that dam annoying Limiter, why wouldn't you. AS for Chris and the other detonation we hear about, I got to believe it's too much timing, you saw my post yesterday, it was 10 degrees here too, I have absolutly never ever had detonation and my chip is on the street program 24/7 at 15 degrees of timing and 11.6 A/F at the high end of WOT. I can also switch on the fly to the Race program (and do without detonation). I don't think our gas is much better than anywhere else, I would imagine NY has B/S laws and additives like all big city's ??? I do have my upper off for the winter, but the 4lb lower is on for life and never comes off. I ran the 4 lower and 2-3 upper all season with the same results and no detonation so again I got to believe it's a timing issue, I have a very mild tune, thats why I'm so dam slow

DON'T WORRY, NEXT SEASON WE'LL STEP IT UP

I'm glad someone agrees on timing. I saw a post on another forum where the guy showed the timing difference between his chip and stock program and it was huge. So many people think A/F ratio all the time that timing never gets brought up. Most of the A'F's posted on dyno's and such have been perfectly fine.

Another thing if you are getting tip in detonation it is timing, period. Your A/F is really safe at part throttle I can promise you. I've run my 6 psi pulley and all the other mods without a chip and I have had no problems. I have yet to have a chip work year round, which is crazy. The factory programming is so conservative you can get away with more than you think, HOWEVER this is not the way for the most HP and may not work on some trucks. I get tickled at people who say they wouldn't do it with out blah, blah ,blah. The fact is you are more likely to suffer problems from a off the shelf chip that has increased timing and and a leaner fuel mixture than no chip at all, BUT has that ever stopped someone.......????

Thanks Mike

That's why I never said "off the shelf" chip, I said dyno-tuned chip.

does some one who knows first hand know if the the stock a/f ratio is richer then a tuned chip for a 4#'er

thats why i'm getting a 4 way psp chip

1. eco (for trips)
2. stock (every day driving w/4lber)
3. street (91 octane)
4. track (100 octane 1000rpm stall)

i'll be running 1 and 2 mostly.
