Check out my FAT new fuel filter

and I mean FAT! This is the fuel filter that discount auto carries for our Lightnings. Its only for the 5.4 SC engine, its shorter and fatter than the stock one by quite a bit. The bracket that holds the stock one in place doesnt fit around it very well but it sure holds it in place, its too fat to go ANYWHERE. I was going to order the OEM filter but didnt have time to order it, and no one locally here that I know of carries motorcraft fuel filters at all.

This is the Purilator brand or however its spelled.

That is the filter for the regular F150 with the 5.4. I just went through the same thing, the catalog they had said that one (the one you have pictured) was for the L, but its wrong. Had the guy look in the computer and found the correct #.

I'm not sure if there is a negative effect. But i figured they use a different one for some reason. When i saw it was a different filter, i took mine back and got the right one.

damnit I have been had, I knew I shouldnt have bought it. I knew what the stock one looked like before I bought it, but that damn parts guy was so insistant that it was the correct one. Its the 1st time I have changed it after 24k miles (I know I know) , she does seem peppy'er now though...but I guess any new filter is going to have a better effect than the one I had on there... I had read a post on here while back about someone using a larger filter from an expy or something...I cant imagine a larger diameter would hurt anything...but maybe someone who is smarter than me will chime in and tell me Im an idiot

same thing happened to me, i got the filter, went home, got under the truck, took the old filter off it's bracket, and said wait a min...... looked at the new fiter and noticed that the OEM filter was a "Mini Me" version of the new filter 1/8th it's size haha, and i had to drive the cobra in the salt to go back to the store, and he had to look in 2 different books to find the right one.

I am using the big-fat-filter (hereafter BFF) since my last change, roughly 3.4K miles ago. I did the same thing, look it up in the book and take their word for it. Got home, too big for bracket... hoses same size though... remove bracket, install. Works fine, and I figure more filtering area aint a bad thing.

Here is a pic of the "FAT" one next to the OEM one. The FAT one is for a 1998 Navigator(and I'm sure, others?). I installed it and see no problems using it instead of the OEM filter:

I'm in the "Fat Filter Club" too. Dang parts people. I didn't want to find out if there were any negative effects though so I got the right one.

I wouldnt think there would be any problems as long as the filter is larger and not smaller. The hoses click on just fine and my truck has run even better than before...but like I said anything beats a filter with 24k miles on it

HAHAHAH thats great. I don't think there is any problem with that kind of filter size as long as it flows eqaul or more then the stock one.

If there was no difference, they would spec the same part,
wouldn't they? I had heard that the Lightning filters were
.5 Micron filters, but I am sure that flow and filter size has
nothing to do with the SIZE of the filter.
