Vinnie is right. Air flowing over the truck creates less drag than air flowing through the engine compartment and under the truck.
The cardboard was an experimemt that led to this:

12.484@109.5...60=1.79


Last fall, it ran 12.4 @109. That was with stock exhaust, stock converter, 3.55 gears and a 2# pulley.

We will see what this year brings.
