Question! Wheels and Wheel Widths

Hope this doesnt sound like a stupid question but what is the difference in the wheel widths. I am going to purchase boyd coddington smoothie 2's 20" and I was wondering which width to go with, either 8.5" or 10", and why does this make a difference? And does it make a difference in the performance or is it just for personal preference? I think I am going with 305/40 R 20 Nitto NT 404 Tires unless anyone has any suggestions on a different size. If one of you professionals out there can help me out with these questions it would be great!!

Thank you,

I would get the wider wheel. If the wheel is too narrow for the tire the tire will bubble up in the middle and wear quicker. You may also get less traction.
