Lightbulb I'm trying a bigger fuel filter........

I saw mention of a 1998 Navigator fuel filter in another thread a few weeks ago. I'm sorry I don't remember who mentioned it but I bought one yesterday and installed it today.

OEM filter(FG-986B)...............................Nav. filter(FG872)
Cost...........$13................................ ..........$15($7 at a parts store)

Dimensions:

Length............6 7/8"..................................6 9/16"
" (of 'can')..3 1/4"..................................3"
Circumference..6 3/8".................................9 1/2"
Diameter..........2 3/8".................................3 1/8"

Those are 'approximent' dimensions as I don't have a caliper.

The longest/hardest part was getting the old filter off, especially the forward disconnect. I had opened the gas cap last night to relieve the pressure and very little fuel came out although the filter had some in its bottom-half.

Once the old one was out, I removed the OEM bracket by taking off the 13mm nut that is on the outer side of the frame rail. This bracket has to come out to make room for the bigger filter. Then I took two stainless, screw-clamps and joined them togeather to get enough length to go around the 'can' and a steel line that runs just under where the filter is placed. I used a 2" piece of 5/8" heater hose(split long-ways) to fit around the line to protect it and the filter body. I then clamed the filter to that line, hooked up the fuel lines, turned the pump on, checked for leaks, turned the eng. on, and checked for leaks again.

The bigger filter fits and the clamp was snugged up tight enough that it didn't touch anything but the piece of hose I added. The tubes are the same size so I don't think it will flow any more than the OEM but it has much more filter element 'size' so it should last longer and may offer more fuel if needed.
