super light spare?

Surely someone has contemplated this problem. If we were able to get enough people interested in buying a super light wheel (and tire), maybe someone like bogart would build one and we wouldn't have to remove it at the track.

The 16" bogart racing wheels are as light as 9lbs. They are good enough to race with so I assume they would be fine as a temp to limp to a tire store or home.

what about a very light tire to go with it?

Doesn't the stock spare weight like 60lbs or something?

You must have more money than I do . Do you know how much that would cost? Why dont you get a Trailer hitch made out of Titanium while your at it .. Take the **** out before you get to the track !! mine is always in the bed so i dont have to mess with it at the track .I cant believe i replied to this post

Um, bogart racing wheels are about $300 for a nicely polished/finished wheel. They should be able to do something quite a bit cheaper since finish won't matter.

It's about a 1.5 hour drive to the track for me and I would like to have my spare. Yes, I can take it off and put it back on but the point of my post was to drop weight ALL THE TIME. Not just at the track. duh. I don't have a trailer hitch...

I picked up a nail on my way home from the track and the tire was REALLY low by the time I could find a *working* air hose at a gas station.

If it was such a asanine request, why DID you post?

And yes, I do make good money.

Ken, I just chucked the spare, as it will not even clear my brakes, and I am going with a low pressure monitoring system.

If somebody made a light weight spare I would get two and use them as skinnies! Just like the aluminumm turbo coup spares we used to use on Mustangs for skinnies.

Just unass the spare and get an awl and a couple plugs. A WallMart portable air compressor for about 9 bucks. If you have a flat chances are you have a cell phone...or if you don't shred it just poke the plugs in the hole with the slotted awl. This is if you want to loose the weight for a daily driver and still have some security. I surmise this is your intent. As for launching yeah some say the weight helps..but I say if it is placed over the fenderwell
axle area it would be best. I have some Caltracs going in in a couple daze and they can't weight more than 20 pounds...Notice how all the 30 tons of fun trucks had these...For better cornering you need to loose weight behind the axle first and then continue to delete....I hear Nitrous is pretty light.

I could be wrong..

retics4me thinks I'm a Dumbass anyway..

who knows...he may be right....

This gets me thinking...

In a Lightning, especially a modified one like many have here... isn't one of the big problems rear traction? If you drop the whole hitch assembly and spare wheel/tire you might lose a couple hundred pounds from the truck, but wouldn't that just make a bad situation (light empty truck bed) worse? My thought is that the weight is actually helping out by keeping tires planted better. Just my 2 cents worth... any mathematical geniuses out there?

The rule of thumb is for every 100 pounds of sprung weight or 10 pounds of unsprung weight and you should gain about 0.10 in the quarter. Taking weight off the back end is bad, but taking any weight out is good. I just added around 20 pounds of unsprung weight with the traction bars, but the gain in the short time was far better.

You just have to launch a little easier with the less weight, but should gain more mph. It's not like taking 100 pounds off the rear is going to make it like you are driving on ice (unless of course you are at Etown )

Can of fix-a-flat and a AAA card... weighs in at about 16.1 ounces. Ditch the monster spare and the hitch while you're back there...

Bogarts rims, as well as pretty much ANY super lightweight drag rims, are not rated for side load. What that means is they are intended to go in straight lines only. Having a rim like that as a spare, would not be a safe idea. Also, the rims get more expensive as the size gets bigger. Currently, a 15" Bogart is about $350 for a 10 inch wide rim. Going to a 16" rim as a spare would require a larger wheel shell and a larger center section. But you'd only need a 7-8" wide rim, so it would just about even out and you'd still have a $350 rim. They might knock $20 off for no polish. Plus you need different lugs, so you'd have to carry a set of spare lugs. It's a neat idea, I just don't think anyone is going to do it.

I solved ALL these problems.

First I DEWEIGHTED the ***** out of the rear-Bumper GONE,Spare GONE,hitch GONE, (Tailgate GONE@ the track only).

The spare is NEVER on the truck.

My solution- My Hoosier QTPs, Lightweight racing jack, and 18 volt Snap-on Cordless impact wrech are always in the bed of the truck.

I can use the QTPs as spare(if needed) and they hook at the track(even E-town) and the best part. I ALWAYS have my race setup with me. If I am at work and decide to go to the track that night.I just go. I am always loaded for racing.

Besides they fit in front of the bed perfect and still leave plenty of room.

To me it is the best of all worlds.
