Is anyone's Truck Doing This?
When my truck sets for a few days and I start it, I get puff of blue smoke. I've been messing with High Performance engines most of my life and this indicates to me that the valve guides and/or seals are defective @ 5400 miles. I took it to the dealer and of course it was like talking to a box of rocks (no need to say anymore). So, I have e-mailed a letter to http://www.planetfeedback.com/ who is surpose to forward it to Ford. Guess I'll play the waiting game now.
My 87 mazda B2000 does the same thing. it has been diagnosed as valve guides by the local garage. ill tell you what though....its an expensive job. my auto tech teacher told me to buy some STP oil additive that helps cut back on smoke. it takes like 1000 miles for it to be noticeable. so try some of that.
good luck!

good luck!
mine has done it before. it has 8000 miles on it. i have heard these pull oil into the intake and ill bet that is the cause, im sure some one will get me on this one but i don't think it is valve guides. this what the oil seperator is for i belive.
did i guess right guys?

If it's only right when you start it, it's ok - these trucks are notorious for taking oil back into the intake system. It's not through the valves, though, they bring it up through the supercharger, throught the upper plenum, into the throttle body, intake boot, and, in extreme cases, into the air intake box itself.
Just be careful when you change your oil. These trucks should NOT have more than 6qts, as per SVT - however some dealers like to put as much as 7qts in there, and recommend that you do the same - which will obviously aggrivate the situation.
Otherwise, the oil, when at its proper full level - will NOT reach the full line on the dipstick. When I drop 6qts in mine, it comes just to the bottom of the first line.
Hope this helps!

i haven't noticed mine doing it, but it never sits for more than a day.....
but i have heard alot of people on here say that they saw "Blue" smoke come out when they started it, so i dont think your alone.

Mine does it once in a while. As long as it's not blowing smoke when youre going down the road i wouldnt worry about it. Sure its not "cool" but just tell everybody thats the supercharger start up auxillary oiling system (computer controlled) Theyll leave you alone.
By the way, there is no such thing. (before i get flamed to death)

Thanks for asking the question! Mine did the "blue fog start up" earlier today. It seems to do it once in a great while--and I can't figure out-- why sometimes, but not others???. I think (?) I've noticed too, that it happens more if the truck doesn't crank on the first try- but does on the second.
Either way--it is embarassing-- it really impresses people that are standing around to hear it crank up--and then you fog em!!!!

If you don't wanna do anything else to your ride....just keep it a half quart low on the dipstick..seems to help. Another thing to be aware of these trucks run rich...fuel and oil and condensation in the exhaust make for a nasty *** emission on start up...My garage wall is a testament to 3 Gen II's leaving a black mess..not to mention the molding behind the exhaust tips.
Another way is the ball bearing in the vacuum lines and the air filter setup.
Amother is a Quality check valve..to keep boost outta the crankcase...see PCV systems and Valve cover vents...
While you're at it add an oil scraper to the crank..just for fun.
Install a loose filter media coalescer.
Another way is to KEEP YOUR FOOT OUTTA IT.....if you can....grin

I hope you guys are right, in that it may not be valve seals and or guides. However, it appears to me if it were coming in from the intake that it would smoke anytime the engine was running.
In my e-mail to http://www.planetfeedback.com/, I explained to them that I was getting no where with the dealer and that I wanted to talk to a factory rep. I'll keep you posted.

Va 01- My 01 did the same thing from day 1!!! After it sat over night it would blow a puff of blue smoke when started the next morning. Seems the longer it sat the worst the cloud of smoke was. I finally took it in to the dealership for an unrelated oil leak from the passanger side head. They ended up replacing the head(I only had 6000 miles on it) and after removing the head found the valve steam seals were leaking pretty bad in the #2 cylinder. The valves and combustion chamber were coated with burnt oil in that cylinder! Since the head replacement, it has never done it again!
It would be my best guess you have the same problem. What is your build #? A friend of mine has a Lightning just a few #'s away from mine and his does the same thing. My build # is 4788. Could be something there, dunno.
Now getting Ford to do something about your problem is another story. They will probably want to start with a lengthy oil consumption test.

If you think you have guide seal problems..just wait till the notorious passenger side head gasket leak rears it's ugly head. This happened to numerous 01's. Mine was leaking at the rear lower corner..You'll know it when the smell of the flashing oil tickles your senses. Then have them pull the head under warranty and inspect for other stuff..
I have an 02 and am wondering if they have had the same problem with the head leaking. I ahve 22,000 miles on my 02 and my truck does the same thing from time to time. Have their been any reports on this happening
