Question on Coil Packs....Please Help.
Well my truck doesn't perform at the track the way I and many others feel it should. I was told by a reputable person in our Lightning community that I should install a fresh set of coil packs. I have 18,000 miles. I am sure water could have gotten up there.....or blah blah blah ya know. I was also told there is no way to test these things>??? Is that true>??? I just can't justify spending $355 on something that may do absolutely nothing for me. I have no driveablity issues either. I would think if I had a bad coil pack I would only be running on 7 cylinders and would notice it a real lot. Do they sometimes just go weak and give bad spark>??? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Oh and I would be the happiest man alive if I did swap these things and ran what I think I should be running. Thanks, -Mat-
i had some coil packs go out a few months ago. the car would shake under moderate throttle and there was a pretty good lose of power. after a few days the check engine light came on. and they can be diagnosed, which is how i figured it out. i don't really understand the coil packs (at all) but they replaced two or four or something. not sure, i didn't bring it there or see the bill. but i know they replaced atleast two, probabley four of them. cost one hell of a lot too!
I can only tell you about my experience.I kept putting mod after mod on my truck and kept running 12.9s.It felt GREAT on the street but at the track at WOT for an extended period of time it felt slower.
I had my coil packs changed and dropped 3 to 4 tenths right away. After that every mod I did showed an improvement, like it should have.
So if it happens to be your coil packs you will be happy you did it.

I know my truck's SES light came on when one of my coil packs went bad. I took it to the shop because of the light and they were able to find it and replace it.
I know another way too, but it's kind of dangerous and I don't want to be responsible for someone electrocuting them self

I was told about your misfortune with the coil packs. Mine feels the same way....wicked on the street but the track numbers just don't show it. Last I went to the track I was stuck in the 12.6's @ 106MPH!!!!! Mods are below. How many miles were on your truck and did you have any driveability issues on the street>??? Thanks -Mat-

Mat,
I had about 14,000 miles on my truck.
The symptoms seem to be the same.Even if you coulnd't hook the nittos and had a bad 60 ,you M.P.H. is still low for them mods.I would expect at least LOW 12s and 108-110 MPH.
Again, not being a mechanic.I have raced cars for a long time though. That might be your problem.
The truck drove fine on the street.I would actually get very mad because I would drive to the track fine, Run slow numbers and drive back fine.
The biggest thing was the truck was not reacting to the mods,at least until I did the coil packs. Then it took about 6 weeks to hit the 11s.

coil packs
i had a coil pack **** the bed at 8k miles. It was 2 days before FFW, so i replaced it myself rather than bringing it to the dealer for warrenty. If you have a bad coil pack, you will know it right away, trust me. It all in the sudden happend as i was leaving a light on the highway under moderate throttle, i though i threw a rod, it was the wierdest thing.

The nittos were grabbing great.....1.7x 60 FTs all day long. I was expecting a very low 12 sec ET. I think it is time to shell out some money and give it a shot. Only problem is I have no way of testing it. Tracks are closed.
Thanks everyone for your help. -Mat-
